John Newton "Jack" SOURBEER

John SOURBEER Obituary

SOURBEER, John Newton

"Jack" passed away September 26, 2016. Born in 1929 in West Newton, PA, Jack earned national recognition at Washington & Jefferson College as one of the 'Four Gazelles,' the most feared backfield in the country in 1948-49. Declining an NFL offer from the Rams, he attended Jefferson Medical College. After service in the Navy, he practiced medicine in Belleair Bluffs for 43 years. Morton Plant Hospital, where he served as Department Chair, President of the Medical Staff, and on the Board of Directors, presented him their Excellence in Medicine Award. A Charter Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine, he also cofounded Morton Plant Primary Care, a parent of BayCare Medical Group. Long retired, he is still recalled fondly by many of his former patients. He is remembered with love as a devoted husband, a wise and loving father, and a kind and generous man by his wife, Jackie; his sister, Jean Maynard; four children, Jeff, Janet, Jon, and Jay; plus two stepchildren, Keith and Caryn and their spouses; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous family and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nelle. Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Turner Street, Clearwater, 10 am, Monday, Oct. 3.

Rest in peace Uncle Jack. I have many fond memories of visiting Florida while growing up. We always had a wonderful time with the cousins, you and Aunt Nelle. Slip n Slide anyone?

I knew Jack as father of one of my best friends (Jeff). He was a kind and caring gentleman who loved and supported his family members and was so proud of their many accomplishments. He made my family feel welcome on several visits to his home over the years. I can only imagine how comfortable and important he made his patients feel in his many years of service to others as a physician. He completed his earthly life well lived, and now rests with the Lord and family and friends in eternal joy and peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

In 1963, as a 6 year old child, my mom took me to Dr. Sourbeer, gravely ill. He diagnosed me with Spinal Meningitis and saved my life at Morton Plant Hospital. I am so grateful. What a great man. My solemn condolences to the family. RIP
