On October 6th after everyone was sound asleep, i finally sat down at the computer and put down on paper what i wanted to say at daddy's funeral, not knowing if i could even speak with all the emotion that i was feeling. My Uncle Tony also decided to say a few words and I am so glad that we both decided to do so. Here are my heartfelt words for my father on the morning of October 7, 2011.

Good morning everyone, thank you all so very, very much for joining us here today.

I'd like to briefly tell you about my dad........but where shall I begin.

He was born on January 9th, 1937 in Karlsdorf, Yugoslavia, named after his father Karl Urban. Karl with a “K” as we would say. He was in between the oldest brother Walter and the youngest Helmuth. The boys lived in Germany with their mother Maria, whom I am proudly named after and her mother, Magdalena. His father was in the German military and died during World War II. The three sons and their mother and grandmother after spending two years in a holding camp to leave Germany came by ship into the New York harbor in 1950.

Karl joined the United States Air Force in 1955. While stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, he fell in love with his wife-to-be, Takeko, and were married on October 7th 1959. Their family grew by five children, myself, Karl Jr also known as “Butchy,” the twins: Mary and Mona, and the youngest Kenneth and then later by nine grandchildren, Steven, Alex, Stacey, Jessica, Andrew, Kyle, Jeffrey, Brian, and Melinda. Today would have been our parent's 52nd wedding anniversary.

Karl retired after 20 years of service in 1975 and drove from his last station at George Air Force Base in Victorville, California across the United States to their new home state of Florida where his brother Helmuth known to all as Tony lived with his wife known lovingly as "Cookie" and two children Bobbie and Linda. They opened their home to us until we could make a home of our own.

My dad lived here in Florida for 36 years not gaining another career, but living out his dream. His hobby of collecting just about anything. He and Tony opened up an antique store on Central Avenue and later on Ridge Road. He also rented a booth at the Wagon Wheel Flea market every weekend where he gained friendships from so many and continued to go every weekend until all his strength had been taken away by the cancer that grew inside of him.

My dad was a strong and sensitive man, gaining strength from struggling to survive a childhood in a war torn country and from the loving care from both his mother and grandmother. And yet, he was like a big kid inside, generous, fun-loving and truly enjoyed his life.

Daddy, you have now joined GOD's embrace and are reunited with your mother, father, grandparents, brother Walter and niece Maureen.

You have given us so many treasured memories to share that far outweigh any sorrow. We will hold together always as a family and carry on where you left off. Rest now and do not worry, for it is our turn as we shall take care of mom for you. Rest in peace, our love to you always.

Dad you are always in our hearts!

Happy 52nd Anniversary Mom & Dad. Today we said our final goodbye to my dad. Thank you to Gloria & Shirley at the Bay Pines National Cemetery. Thank you to the MacDill Air Force Base Honor Guard for their military honors ceremony which was perfectly executed with precision, respect, and a quiet beauty that was seen and felt by all. Thank you to my husband's son (and mine) Robert for driving down to be with us and wearing his Army Dress Blues, he looked so handsome. My Uncle Tony spoke from the heart while i read from paper the words i put down quitely last night as everyone slept. The Picture Memories CD that Butchy's wife Nancy put together was moving yet made you truly appreciate all the good times shared. Thank you to each and everyone that came to pay tribute and helped put everything together to celebrate the life we loved. And, now the day is done and I can say that through all the sorrow, it was a very special day indeed. We love you. Maria, Jim, Andrew, & Melinda.

There are so many wonderful times that we shared. There were those silly times while we fished to the serious times that marked the stages in my life. You have always been there and I will deeply miss your playful spirit and infectous smile.

Karl, my brother,my best friend and business partner. After he retired from the Air Force we spent 34 years together. We laughed and had great times together. We shared our sorrow when we lost our loved ones. Karl was very sentimental, when we lost a pet it was enough to bring him to tears. He was very thoughtful of others. Karl, you will be forever in my heart and thoughts.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
