Larry Marshall Obituary

RAPID CITY - Larry Lyle Marshall, 58, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the Swedish Medical Center in Denver. Larry was born Feb. 12, 1951 to Theone and Lyle Marshall in Huron. He grew up in the Hitchcock and Bonilla areas and graduated from Hitchcock High School in 1969. Larry married Cindy Buchholz Dec. 9, 1972, in Redfield, and they began farming until 1980 when they moved to Sierra Leone, West Africa, as missionaries. He continued in mission ministries for 23 years. He spent five years in Sierra Leone, seven years in the inner city of Chicago, six years working with Native American ministries, three years in Mozambique, and two years in Liberia. He loved helping the poor and was a strong advocate for them. In Africa, he planted churches, built schools, drilled wells, started animal multiplication projects, and trained drilling teams in other African countries. In Chicago, he was the director for a residential drug and alcohol treatment program for the homeless. While working with the Native Americans he was in charge of the volunteer program, and then later became the Director. In the middle of the 23-year period, he received his Associate's Degree in Cross Cultural Ministries from Bartlesville (Okla.) Wesleyan. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Marshall, Rapid City; children, Nathan (Charity) Marshall, Lakenheath AFB, England, and Aaron (Carisa) Marshall, Jordan (Kim) Marshall, and Demetrious Reed, all of Rapid City; three grandchildren; two sisters, Sandy (Roger) Kissner, Huron, and Marlis (Bill) Costello, Alexandria, MN; his brother, Jack (Midge) Marshall, Huron; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenny Marshall; and niece, Sherrie. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Friday, Oct. 2, at Kirk Funeral Home. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the gymnasium at Open Bible Christian Center, with Pastor Steve Selfridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. View Cemetery. The day before Larry's accident, he led a Bible study that we attended. He asked specifically that "if you died tomorrow, how would you be remembered, and did you live your life as Jesus would want". We also watched a video by Bruce Wilkinson called "Secrets of the Vine". Larry bore fruit. He was (is) a very special person, and part of the fruit that he bore was an amazing impact on the lives of others. The accident makes no sense, and his death makes no sense. We do not see what God's plan is in this, and we do not understand why he had to suffer so much. But God knows, and today we know that Larry is with him, and we know for certain we will see him again.

Mr. Marshall will always be remembered for his sweet and giving spirit. He has touched so many lives. I will always be thankful for having Cindy and Larry in my life. I love you all and we will miss Larry incredibly. Take care and God Bless

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy. After losing my father, I felt like part of my life had ended. Yet, I drew strength from reflecting on the many things we had shared. And most, importantly God gave me power beyond my own strength to endure. (2 Corinthians 4:7)

On behalf of Katina Reed-Singleton & family, we would like to send our condoloences to the family during their time of mourn. Although Bro. Marshall has departed from the natural, his spirit still remains here on earth through all of us that loved him dearly. I believe that if he could speak now he would say don't cry, but lift your head and rejoice for I have gone to a place where there is no more pain and no more sorrow. Know in your hearts that I have lived a great life and now that I have departed life must continue. Just as he called I answered, and now I am own my way to a brighter day. I will see you all again one day, and then you all will understand why I must say: Until we meet again I will always love you all. I say to the family be of good cheer and just know that we love you all. If there is anything that we can do for you, we are here for you. Love always the Singleton Family.
