WORKMAN, Margaret Merts
98, died peacefully, with her family and Pastor by her side, on December 20, 2016 in Clearwater. She was born on February 18, 1918, in Huntsville, AL to Milton and Margaret Merts. The young family soon moved to Atlanta, GA where she grew up with her brother, Milton and sister, Marion. She graduated from North Avenue Presbyterian School in 1936 and attended Randolph Macon College. She enjoyed experiencing all the fun and excitement that Atlanta society offered, where she met Roy A. Workman Jr. They married in 1941. During their early married life she supported her husband's military career, that lasted for the duration of WWII. In 1946 they moved to Clearwater where they purchased one of the first post-war houses, built on Lebeau Street in North Clearwater. She was a partner with her husband while he operated the Clearwater Airpark (with associates Tokey Walker and Robert Word), and then as he started and grew a successful manufacturing business that still operates today as a commercial real estate management company. They moved to Belleair in 1953 where she lived until 2012, when she moved to Pinecrest Senior Living in Largo. The couple had three children, and she was a loving and involved mother while also participating in many clubs and volunteer opportunities. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a member of the Junior League, the YWCA, the DAR, the Clearwater Community Women's Club, and Questers. She was a supporter of the Abilities Foundation, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Morton Plant Hospital Foundation, and other local arts. She was a member of the Belleair Country Club, the Clearwater Yacht Club, Carlouel Yacht Club and Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed using her talents as a gardener to keep her homes beautiful and welcoming. She loved her second home in Little Switzerland, NC, and enjoyed traveling with her husband and family to many places in the US and abroad. She never missed an opportunity to have fun and was always supportive of her family. She will be missed by her family and many friends, whose lives were brightened by her ready and happy smile. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Jr.; her parents; and her brother and sister. She is survived by her children, Meg Workman Camp (Ashby), Tempe, AZ, Roy Workman III (Brooks), Belleair, and John Workman (Barbara), Largo; grandchildren, Roy Workman IV, Thornton, CO, David Workman, Erie, CO, Alice Workman, Belleair, and Alissa Camp Devine, Colorado Springs, CO; her seven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Anna, and Audrey Devine, Colorado Springs, CO, and Finn, Kaylie, Devin, and Lincoln Workman, Erie, CO; and six nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 11 am on Thursday, January 26, at Peace Memorial Presbyterian Church, 110 S. Fort Harrison Ave., Clearwater, 33756, with reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Peace Memorial Presbyterian.
