Richard Dawson "Rick" SHORES

SHORES, Richard Dawson "Rick," 69, passed away December 11, 2009, at Duke University Hospital

in Durham, N.C., from complications of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis after a lung transplant. Rick was born in Tampa, January 2, 1940, where he grew up and met his wife of 48 years, Gail Ann Carmichael Shores. His career took Rick and Gail to various parts of the country including North Carolina, Texas, Connecticut and Indiana. However, they returned to North Carolina 12 years ago to be closer to family. After a productive career in safety, health and environmental management that spanned over 45 years and included work with the space program and pandemic planning, Rick recently retired from the State of North Carolina and had previously retired from GTE Corp. He was a longtime member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and held a bachelor' s degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. Rick had many interests, but was always fascinated by anything on wheels. His love of racing and cars drove him to race his own Legends car and build a Cobra replica. Rick is survived by his wife and the mother of his children, Gail; his children, Richard Dawson Shores II of Apex, N.C., and Pamela Jo Shores of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Ann Shores; and granddaughters, Stephanie Ann Shores and Allison Michelle Shores. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Cleveland "Dick" Shores and Ola Versie Gavin Shores; and granddaughter, Lauren Michelle Shores.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Road, Raleigh, NC 27604. The family will receive relatives and friends 1-2 p.m., prior to the service, Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.
