Richard STOWERS Obituary

of Brandon, FL, born July 4, 1929, passed away at home on January 9, 2019, at the age of 89. Survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Raymetta, who he married on April 23, 1984; his son, Kevin Talbert, and daughters, Kellie Kintz (Tom) and Kimberly Kimbrel; grandchildren, Caitlin, Megan, Kate, Callie and Jack; daughters, Cynthia Stowers, Marsha Riddle and Cathy Stowers; grandchildren, Jonathan (Caroline), Chris (Melissa), Lisa, Olivia (Christian) and Andrew (Chris); and 11 great-grandchildren. Educated at Palm River Elementary School, Brandon HS (class of 1947) and Dallas Institute Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science (1959), Dick established Stowers Funeral Home & Ambulance Service, Tampa Chapel, Riverview Chapel, B. Marion Reed and Marsicano Funeral Home. In September 1960, he purchased the Brandon Homestead. Renovation and restoration occurred and during the Brandon Centennial in 1990, an historic marker was secured for the home. He served his community in varied positions; some of which included President of the Chamber of Commerce, Honorary Mayor of Brandon, Brandon Man of the Year, Roundtable President and Charter member of the Elks Club. He served on many Boards, some of which are Brandon Hospital Board, Bank of Riverview, Partners Bank, Boys and Girls Club of Brandon and St. Pete Junior College where he established the Stowers Restorative Art Laboratory. He received much recognition from Brandon Business Person of the Year, Brandon Man of the Year, Community Service Award, Pride in Brandon Award to the Brandon HS Hall of Fame. With many successful businesses behind him, Dick became a very generous benefactor to the entire community. He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church, Brandon Kiwanis Club, Egypt Temple Shrine, Tampa Historical Society, Tampa and Ybor City Street Railway Society, Riverview Chamber of Commerce, Past Master of Palma Ceia Masonic Lodge and an honorary member of the Brandon Masonic Lodge. In 2008, Hillsborough County School System named Stowers Elementary in his honor. Dick built his lifetime dreams in Hillsborough County. He was proud to support countless youth programs and prep sports teams. He was especially proud of the fact that he provided ambulance service to every Brandon High School football game from 1961 to 1978. This man has unselfishly given back, helping in his small way, to make his home the outstanding community it is today. Dick was a just man; who sought no honor, betrayed no trust; this truth he proved in every path he trod, an honest man is the noblest work of God. A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Saturday, January 12, at 1 pm with the family receiving friends from 11-1pm at New Hope United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandon Boys and Girls Club (213 Knights Avenue, Brandon, FL 33510 )or Riverview Boys and Girls Club( 6808 Krycul Avenue Riverview, FL 33578) or New Hope United Methodist Church building fund, 120 N. Knights Ave., Brandon, FL 33510.

My brother, Ken Stowers, called to let me know our Uncle Dick had passed away. He is our birth father, Jim Stowers, brother. So happy I was able to spend a week with him and Raymetta in Feb 13. I have carried Uncle Dicks Stowers Funeral Home business card in my wallet since he came up to my brother, Bobs funeral in Aug 77! I'm glad he was honored by having the Stowers Elementary School named after him and I got to tour it during my visit. Since returning home, I enjoyed going to see his 1924 Ford Model TT Hoover Hearse that is on display at the National Museum of Funeral Home History in Houston TX. I have always felt closer than a niece and he will hold a special place in my heart for such a humble man. No more pain. Gone but not forgotten. RIP Uncle Dick. I love you.

Dick, you were there for my family, there for my parents when they lost my brother, and my Mom had many warm memories of your high school days. Thank you for coming and carting my brother to Tampa General when he fell out of a tree and Brandon didn't have an ambulance...the good old days. You will be missed.
