Robert MACK Obituary

MACK, Robert Lee

October 31, 1941 - March 29, 2018.

Robert Lee Mack, better known as Pie, Mack, Cap, Bob, Daddy, or Granddaddy, now rests in peace with his parents and brothers. His journey on Earth completed, he is now in the company of his beloved mother and cheering on his Miami Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Rays.

For years, Pie battled health issues and somehow, he would overcome every obstacle. He would recover, put on his signature canes hat and head back to the hobbies he loved; gardening, remote control planes, and serving the homeless of Punta Gorda. When he was not tinkering around his home, he was spending time with family or on his "flip-phone" so he would not miss a thing. Family and friends were absolutely everything to him.

Pie was born in Lake City, FL, as the youngest of four children. He would proudly wear the badge of "Momma's Boy" and doted on his mother faithfully. He was her Sweetie Pie. The family moved to St Petersburg where Pie played trumpet in the Gibbs High School band. It was during this time he developed his love for all things plants while working in the nursery at Webbs. As a native Floridian, he loved driving and exploring the backroads of the state. He shunned GPS driving directions, and could tell you how to get to any town in Florida, a skilled learned while delivering rolls of fiberglass to Florida's boat builders.

After high school and college at Florida Normal University he continued his quest for adventures by joining the United States Marine Corps. He was extremely proud of his service and would only take off his University of Miami cap in order to wear a USMC cap. It was during his time in the service where he developed his passion for leading, mentoring, and coaching.

After Pie's time in the USMC, he moved to Miami where he would spend the next 30 plus years as a passionate educator and guidance counselor for Dade County Public Schools. He also found a love of wrestling and coaching; his coaching team would end up as one of state's most successful teams in history.

With his teaching career behind him, Pie continued his passion for teaching, coaching, and mentoring as a member of the New Day church community in Punta Gorda. He discovered the community while out on one of his famous country drives and immediately fell in love with the Deep Creek area. He loved his home, his neighbors, his friends and his church.

To know Bob was to befriend a gentle, humble, unassuming and sincere friend. Although short in stature and humble in character, he left a mark on many, many lives. He sincerely wanted to know "How you were doing" the question was not cliche for him. He will be truly missed.

Bob leaves behind a legacy; his children, Derek, Michele, and Patrick. His sisters, Flossie Hillsman, Jessie Napper and Carolyn Browning. Six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Those gone before him include his parents John Thomas Jr and Willie B Thomas. His brothers Cecil and Billy.

In his memory, you may make a donation to charities that assist in the fight against homelessness or live a life caring for others, be there for someone.

Bob's life celebration will be 10 am, Saturday, April 7 at New Day Church, 20212 Peachland Blvd. Port Charlotte, FL 33954. Bob will be placed to rest with his parents, Saturday, April 7 at 2 pm, at Royal Palm North, 2600 Gandy Blvd, St. Petersburg, FL 33702, with reception to follow at James B Sanderlin Family Center, 2335 22nd Ave S., St. Petersburg, FL 33712.

In 1992, I was in 7th grade at Palmetto Middle School. I had just moved from Texas, and hurricane Andrew had hit. I had no friends. I was also androgynous in ways that weren´t talked about then, so each day at school was incredibly stressful and scary. When I remember that year, the only person who was kind to me and whom I felt safe around was Mr. Mack. He would have me in his office and just let me talk. He even gave me a model airplane as I was into those back then. So, thank you Mr Mack, for being kind to me. Your kindness helped me survive a very difficult year. I wish I could have told you that while you were here. All blessings and best wishes to his family, what a gift to be related to such an incredible person.

I was Bob's barber and a friend for the past 17 or 18 years. If Bob could hear me today; I'd say " Bob! As the best Barber in the world; I must say that I've really enjoyed servicing you for all of these years!" "And... Bob... I said goodbye to the Amazon for ya!"Your former Barber

Patrick and family. I was so sad to see that your dad had passed. He was one of my absolute favorite people. No matter what kind of day he was having or how bad he felt, he was one of the most upbeat, positive, happy people I have ever met. My life is so much better for having met this man. Please accept my sincere condolences. Good bye, Mr Mack. We will meet again someday.

One dedicated educator and passionate coach... his gift to all of his students at Palmetto Jr was his caring and giving soul! He loved us all and we loved him too. May the angels be celebrating his arrival in heaven and may he continue to watch over all his former students too. We were all blessed to know him.
Miss you Mr Mack!!!

Bob was one of the finest people I ever met. I will truly miss seeing him at Winn Dixie. Our conversations were about everything but the biggest topic was family. Bob was so proud of his family as I am of mine. He was a huge Cane fan but an even bigger supporter of education. He loved hearing about all the accomplishments my sons made in school. The world has definitely lost an incredible human being that did so much for so many without having to raise a finger. Every time I will think of him I will smile and remember a remarkable customer with so many stories who brightened up my day. God bless you my friend. You are now home.

Condolences to the entire Mack Family and Bob's Circle of Friends. Bob touched the lives of so many young people, adults, really everyone he came to know. So many were blessed to have him as a counselor, mentor, trusted friend and confidant. The 100s of boys he steered to the Palmetto Wrestling Room over 30 years all greatly benefited from that guidance. I have known very few people like Bob, humble and a real gentleman. Bob had a tremendous gift in his overall personality and ability to impart wisdom. So many people loved him. I sure did. We miss you Mr Mack!!

One who plants seeds of hope and kindness, one who finds joy in service, will live on in hearts and memories forever.

All of the lives touched by this man over the years cannot be counted, but the ripple of these small deeds has left a profound mark. Job well done. Touching the lives of young people and passing the torch to them with wisdom and insight..... it means so much. You are loved beyond measure, Grandaddy, and we will carry your memories, lessons and stories with us. Thank you so much

Mr.Mack was a beautiful spirit. I worked with him as a new assistant principal at Palmetto Middle School. He was such a welcoming spirit and always had an encouraging and reassuring word for me. I appreciated him immensely and loved working with him. I've thought of him often after leaving that school. May God bless his soul as he rests in peace with his parents and brothers. My sympathy to the family on this huge loss.
