Sam Militello Obituary

Militello, Sam

87, died on March 9, 2025. Those left behind to remember Sam's legacy of love and generosity include his beloved wife of 52 years, Anne (Nancy) B. Militello; and their children, Andrew; and his wife, Stephanie; along with their children, Ethan and Alyssa; Charlie; and his wife, Jaclyn, along with their son, Nicholas. He is also survived by his sister, Felicia (Carol) Austin; her husband, Robert; and brother-in-law, Martin Butler. Sam was born on September 24, 1937, to Angelo and Lily Militello. He graduated from Jesuit High School in Tampa, attended the University of Tampa for his pre-engineering studies, and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1961. He met his wife and the love of his life in 1970, at a party neither had initially been interested in attending. They married in 1972. Through a shared love for travel, they visited 65 countries and nearly all 50 U.S. states, with a highlight being a 3-month cruise around the world. They also greatly enjoyed their annual summer visits to the Bryson City area of the western North Carolina mountains. Following graduation, Sam joined JE Greiner Company in Tampa as a structural engineer, shortly after the National Interstate Highway System had begun design and construction. Greiner had been selected to design segments of I-4 and I-275 through Tampa, and Sam was involved with the design of several bridges along both highways. Sam rose through the Greiner organization to become office manager, regional manager, and eventually national director of operations. He later served as Eastern US Engineering Director for DMJM in Baltimore, MD, and as Chief Operating Officer for TBE Group in Clearwater, FL. During his nearly 50 year engineering career, Sam was involved in numerous projects, including Tampa, Orlando, Denver and Hong Kong International Airports; transit and rail projects in Miami, Orlando, Puerto Rico, and the Northeast U.S.; and flood control projects in Louisiana. He was actively involved in several technical and professional engineering associations and served as President of the Tampa Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society, President of the Florida Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and State President of the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers. He also served in the Florida National Guard as Battalion Direction Center Leader for the 116th Artillery headquartered at Ft. Homer W. Hesterly in Tampa. A Funeral Mass will be held at Incarnation Catholic Church (Sam and Nancy's Parish for over 50 years) on Friday, March 28 at 11 am. The family will welcome and greet friends and family in the foyer of the church beginning at 10:30 am, and a reception will follow at Sam and Nancy's nearby home. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Incarnation Catholic Church, LifePath Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
