Thomas Glew Obituary

Glew, Thomas Charles

a man of boundless curiosity, deep integrity, and unwavering kindness, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, in Freeport, Bahamas, at the age of 86. He was born October 23, 1938.

Tom, known to many as a brilliant mind and a gentle soul, lived a life guided by a profound respect for all people and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. A 1960 Annapolis Naval Academy graduate, an engineer by training, and a historian and geographer at heart, he approached the world with both precision and wonder. Whether he was poring over a technical manual, charting a course for a sailing trip, or simply sharing a laugh with a friend, Tom brought warmth, wisdom, and humor to every moment.

Tom's integrity was unmatched. He treated everyone with dignity and kindness, never judging, always listening. His laughter was infectious, stories unforgettable, and his presence a comfort to all who knew him.

He had a sailor's spirit - adventurous, steady, and always attuned to the winds of change. But it was his role as a father, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend that brought him the greatest joy. His family was his true north, and he navigated life with love as his compass. His love for others was truly unconditional, and his energy, living life with no regrets, was extraordinary.

He is survived by his wife, MaryAnn Glew; children, Sharon Glew Leite (Joseph), Michael Glew (Kelly), and Eric Glew (Virginia Mercée); his seven grandchildren, Megan (Ryan), Dorsey, Madeleine, Rachel, Carson, Ethan, and Macey; one great-grandchild, Ava; and brothers, David Glew (Ann), Robert Glew, and Charles Glew (Kathie).

A Celebration of Life will be held in early August, date to be determined.

He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, curiosity, and quiet strength - a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

From a Navy hymn sung every Sunday in Annapolis: "Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm hath bound the restless wave...thus evermore shall rise to thee, glad hymns of praise from land and sea. Amen."

Tom Glew's generosity and hospitality are responsible for me being able to share some of my life's favorite moments. Whether sailing on the Gulf of MEXICO, or the Florida Banks he was always a noble, grounded champion of the common man. God Bless him.

I only wish I had met Tom earlier - a man whose intellect and boundless curiosity left a lasting impression. I had the opportunity to crew on his beloved Beneteau Oceanis 461 and witness at age 85 win the St Petersburg to Isla Mujeres, Mexico Race. Rest in peace Captain.

To Eric and family..
So sorry to hear of his death. Such an interesting fun man, I know you and your children will miss him terribly. The thing I always remember was how nice he was to me when I accidentally ran into his rental car at your house in San Diego.
He could have said .., "oh Crap" or something of the sort ... instead was just kind and made me feel cared for!" Thank you, Mr. Glew. I know you will be missed by many.

I hope you are all fine!

My boss/friend Allen Borne encouraged me to sail in a race on Tom´s boat (I had just completed sailing lessons). I learned so much that day, I have never had as many bruises ever again. I was exhausted. I left the yacht club to drive home and was stopped by JP, I had not had a thing to drink, my car lights weren´t on. That is my greatest memory of Tom Glew

My wife, Jean, and I were friends of Tom and Mary Ann when they lived in Euclid, Ohio and University Heights, Ohio during the 1960s. We were members of the Young Democrats in Cleveland, Ohio and a large group of young men and women starting their careers. Our times with Tom and Mary Ann included political and social activities as well as our regular poker games sometimes at Tom's home. After they moved away from the Cleveland area, we didn't see Tom and Mary Ann until we were spending the winter in Venice, Florida and Tom brought his family to visit us with his boat and hosted us for lunch at the Venice yacht club. We have fond memories of all our times with the Glew family and offer our condolences upon Tom's death.

We had the honor of knowing Tom through the St. Pete Yacht Club, and the true honor of ailing with him to Isla Mujeres aboard Xtsea. Seeing him was always a bright spot in our day. He was indeed kind, compassionate, and always ready with wit and intelligence. We'll miss him, Mary Ann and Eric, and our thoughts are with all of your family.
