Thomas Tighe Obituary

TIGHE, Thomas J., 74, of Temple Terrace passed away on January 15, 2003 following a brief illness. He was born December 30, 1928 in Hartford, Connecticut. After earning a bachelor's degree at Trinity Collegein Hartford, he served in the army during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He then attended Cornell University and received his Ph.D. in Experimental and Developmental Psychology in 1959. In the same year, he married fellow graduate student, Louise Sherlock. They celebrated their 43rd anniversary on November 21, 2002. Dr. Tighe first taught at Columbia University and later at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, he became interested in academic administration. He then became Dean of the school of Human Development at the University of Texas at Dallas, followed by serving as Provost at the University of Connecticut and then as Provost and Executive Vice President of the University of South Florida. Dr. Tighe was an active scholar who published four books and numerous research papers in the fields of psychology and neuro-science. He held prestigious positions in several influential academic societies. He recently completed his fifth book while serving as a faculty member of the USF Department of Psychology, a position which he held until his death. He is survived by his wife, Louise; daughter, Lisa Tighe Cramer; and son-in-law, Rex Cramer; son,Mark Tighe; and daughter-in-law, Mitzi Kremer Tighe; sister, Mary Tighe Tackett; and brother-in-law, Tom Tackett; and sister, Frances Tighe. He is also survived by his beloved golden retrievers, Belle and Tiger. Viewing for friends and family will be Monday, January 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Prevatt Funeral Home in Temple Terrace, followed by a service at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
