Thomas TOPPING Obituary
62, St. Petersburg, passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014 at Northside Hospital. Thomas was born Oct. 6, 1952 in Detroit, MI to Ernest and Thelma (Schultz) Topping. He moved with his family to Florida in 1960. Tom graduated from Northeast High School in 1970 and served in the US Army from 1970-1973. He enjoyed sports, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. Thomas is survived by his daughter, Holly Topping and grandson, Jade Green, both of St. Petersburg; three sisters, Jackie Hovey of St. Petersburg, Sandy Salch of Spring Hill, and Debra Brown of Dunedin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Thelma, and his brother, Daniel Topping. A celebration of life service is being planned for January 2015. Details to be announced.

I was sad to hear the loss of a close childhood friend. Though our adult lives took us in different directions the mention of Tommy always brought back great memories of my youth. From playing baseball all day long, to jumping on the trampoline at Fossil Park youth center, to the all night card games we played at Bob Bruce's house.

I'm saddened to hear of Tom passing. Tom and I were confirmed together at Grace Lutheran Church by the late Pastor Martin W. Rupprecht. I have attached a photo from that day. Tom is front row, far right. We spent a lot of time together during those two years of Saturdays mornings. He would stop by our house on his bike, and we would ride together to the church for classes. Tom was an exceptional athlete and a very tough kid. During our many years of baseball he played hard and fair. He was honest to himself and his teammates. I will always remember the homer he hit off me to right field in a big game. Tom was a great kid. God bless him.
