William ANGELL Obituary

ANGELL, Dr. William Willson passed away on June 20, 2022 at the age of 87. Bill was born on April 1, 1935 to Harry Kenyon Angell and Martha Willson Angell in Cortland, New York. He was the second of three brothers, and the children tragically lost both parents before Bill turned ten. They were taken in by their aunt, Mary Willson, who moved the boys to a hunting cabin in rural Crosby, Pennsylvania, beginning Bill's lifelong love of the outdoors. Bill graduated from Smethport High School, where he helped set a four-man relay state record that stood for nearly fifty years. He attended college at Cornell and, rather than follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer, pursued a medical degree at Rochester. After graduation, Bill married Nancy Smith and moved to California for his residency at Stanford. Bill and Nancy had three children, Cathy (1963), Scott (1965), and Craig (1968). During residency, Bill completed a pathology fellowship in Scotland and a cardiovascular fellowship at Stanford with the renowned heart surgeon Norman Shumway. Bill's research contributed to Dr. Shumway's completion of the first successful adult heart transplant in the United States and third in history. From there, Bill earned independent medical fame for his research into pig heart valve preservation for human implantation. He formed a company for this purpose, Bravo, and it is likely that patients are alive today with an Angell valve keeping them going. Bill then married his second wife, Judith Damir, and moved to San Diego in 1982. They had two children, Derek (1982) and Braden (1983). After a decade at Scripps Clinic, the family relocated to Tampa where Bill treated countless patients at many Bay Area hospitals. He ultimately partnered with Dr. Lester Ordiway, forming Angell & Ordiway, a cardiothoracic surgical practice, that continues operation. Bill never retired, and his remarkable six-decade career will forever inspire us. But you would never know it if you met him. Bill never talked about himself. He would much rather learn about your accomplishments and help fix your problems than discuss his fascinating work or myriad achievements. Never short on projects, Bill was an avid snow skier, scuba diver, sport fisherman, sculler, bicyclist, runner, and, having never touched a club before his 75th birthday, golfer. More than that, Dad was the center of our family, and our hearts are broken without him. The youngest 87 year old the world has ever known, Dad is gone too soon. Bill was predeceased by his parents and brothers, George and Jim. He is survived by his wife, five children, and numerous nephews, nieces, and grandchildren. A service will be held at the Palma Ceia Country Club, 1601 S. MacDill Ave, Tampa, on Saturday, July 23, from 1-4 pm. All who knew Bill and his family are invited to attend.

Its heart warming to read the messages here about my Uncle Bill. He was my dads brother and best friend. I have fond memories of visiting he and Judy in San Diego, Tampa and a very memorable fishing trip to the Bahamas. If there's a heaven surely the Angell boys are reunited with their mother and father whom they lost way to soon here on earth.

I met Bill when he was introduced to my husband and I at my uncles house.Lee and Mary Damir when he married my cousin Judy .Judy grew up down the street from me on Edgebrook Drive and we(Damir family) were very happy for her when she met Bill.Bill was a very sweet humble man and you'd never know he was a heart surgeon .They moved to.Florida and it's been alot of years now since I've seen Judy or Bill. I am 68 and many years have passed My prayers for all of them and the assurance if you know Jesus as your savior we all will see each other again in Heaven

My heart felt condolences to the whole family. I am an OR RN who had the privilege of scrubbing for A&W as they were known. Angell was a force and without question a stellar surgeon with great judgement and a great sense of humor! They are both together again in the OR in heaven!

Dear Judy and Family,
Our hearts break for your your loss. Although many years have passed since you moved to Tampa we have not forgotten this most incredible man who saved my Dad's life so many times during his fight with heart disease. Bill gave my Dad over 25 years of life after his first heart attack but most memorable was the bond they formed as friends. May Bill and Al be sharing stories now about diving, fishing and hunting and eating some Cioppino and Polenta. Bill was always about the root of life, his family and what really mattered let alone a Brilliant man and heart surgeon. Our deepest condolences and love, Clarence and Sheila (Rossi) Prado.

Never met this man, but his research and dedication may be the reason a husband of 59 years, 4 children, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren had my beautiful mother for an additional 18 years. My mom had a pig heart valve implanted in Buffalo, NY 18 years ago that was supposed to last 10 years and lived a very active life until 3 months ago and passed away 2 weeks ago at age 87. I do not know if her valve was one of your dad's, but I am sure grateful for his contributions to cardiovascular medicine. My condolences to you.

Judy and family, Our heartfelt condolences to you on Bill's passing. His arrival in Tampa gave me a much needed inspirational shot in the arm, as well as our practice. He and you deserve kudos for hanging in there in a not always welcoming environment. He was a model of endurance. Our best to you. Steve and Terry
