Michael Flood Obituary

Michael Timothy Flood

Of Angel Fire, New Mexico passed February 9, 2025 in Denver, Colorado at Swedish Hospital after a month long illness. A memorial is scheduled for 11 a.m., March 3, 2025 at St. James Episcopal Church in Taos, New Mexico. Mike was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 19, 1942 to Donald and Elizabeth Flood. He went to the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts from 1960-1964. In the autumn of1964, Mike started graduate school in the Chemistry Department of Columbia University in New York City. In the summer of 1965, his research professor moved to the California Institute of Technology, and Mike moved to Pasadena, California. Mike married Sandra Wasko in June 1969. After a stay as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, in 1970-73 Mike worked in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on a National Academy of Sciences project helping to develop science there. Mike then spent several years each teaching at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont,CA and at Beloit College, Beloit, WI. About 1978, Mike moved to the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC and worked at the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection agency. In 1995, Mike joined the law firm of Keller and Heckman as a Scientist and he and Sandra moved to Baltimore, MD. He retired in 2014. In 2000, Mike and Sandra bought land in Angel Fire, NM, and soon built their unique octagonal house there. For a while, theyspent winters in Baltimore MD and summers in Angel Fire. In 2014, they settled permanently in Angel Fire with their cats. Mike and Sandra loved the outdoors and often went hiking or backpacking, especially in the surrounding areas of Northern New Mexico. Mike was very active at St. James Church and enjoyed being a part of its community. He was a lively participant at Bible-study Friends and also cofounded the Environmental group at the church. Every year he took groups hiking through the NM mountains with his camera and sharing his knowledge of the area. Most recently he took a photography course in the Northeast and returned with extraordinary pictures, using the knowledge on photographing New Mexico. Mike shared his talent with Christmas Cards to his friends and family. Most of all, he loved getting down to brass tacks sharing a few beers with friends while discussing religion, politics, and the spirit of the world. Mike is survived by his wife Sandra Wasko-Flood and their beloved cats, his brother Donald J. Flood and wife, of Pembroke Pines, FL, his sister Linda Flood Blaszak, and husband, of Elyria, OH, and his sister in law, Linda "Sasha" Wasko, Santa Fe, NM, and close life-long friend, Doug Lafollette, WI, Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, MD and Robert Reedy, Los Alamos, NM and all his many friends in Taos and Angel Fire.
