Lawrence Flentie Obituary

Larry Flentie, a longtime South Bay resident, passed away on January 6th with his family by his side following a brief illness. He was the Executive Chef for New York Food Company.

Born in Torrance in 1959, Flentie was a 1978 graduate of South Torrance High School. He entered the food and beverage industry as a teenager, working his way up from a fruit cutter at Park Pantry to national training chef for Houlihans. He served as the Food and Beverage Director of The Comedy and Magic Club, and for the last 24 years led NYFC's culinary team.

Flentie, also known as "Big Daddy King of Food," was well regarded for his strong work ethic and devotion to his family. His greatest joy was supporting the athletic and academic achievements of his daughter Maddie, and he was known for the gourmet creations he served at high school and club volleyball games.

Larry will be greatly missed by his wife of eighteen years, Christi, his daughter Madeleine, brother Richard, nephew Rick, mother-in-law Carol Wood, sister-in-law Ali Lamberson (John), nieces Josephine Lamberson and Kaylee Whitworth, and a host of long-time friends. He is predeceased in death by parents Laurence and Katherine, brother Michael, and sister Diane.

A Celebration of Life honoring Larry will be held January 15th from 3:30 – 8:30 pm at Verandas in Manhattan Beach. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial donation to The Madeline R. Flentie College Fund: www.gofundme.com/lflentiememorial

I was probably one of Larrys first childhood friends. I was friends with the entire family. Larry's mom Kathie babysat me when I was 4. Larry was bright, a good athlete and had a very good sense of humor. One of his made up quotes is as fallows: : don't be a dooby doby, get some hobbie hobby super surfer wheels". Thankful to have know him.

Chef Larry or "second dad" as I would sometimes call him was always so loving and kind. He was easily one of my favorite parents of my friends and whenever I would go to Maddie's house it would feel like I was at home because of how welcoming he was. I'll always remember how supportive he was of Maddie and I at our volleyball tournaments and all of the amazing food he would make. He will be dearly missed
