Charles Arbor Obituary

CHARLES JOSEPH ARBOR Charles Joseph (Charlie) Arbor passed away on July 18, 2005, in Jupiter, Florida, after a long illness. He was born February 12, 1918 in Rumford, Maine, to Joseph and Anna (Galinauski) Arbor. Charlie graduated from Stephens High School, Hebron Academy and the University of Maine. He taught and coached football and basketball at Hallowell High School from 1947 until 1953 when he transferred to Cony High School, where he became principal in 1963. He retired from that position in 1976. Charlie served in the U.S. military during World War II. Marguerite, his wife of over fifty years, died in late December, 2000 and his only child, Joseph, also predeceased him. Charlie's sister-in-law, Evelyn Arbor, of Mexico, Maine, and a large number of nieces and nephews survive. He will be deeply missed by them, as well as by many of his former students, athletes, and colleagues. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Frank (Sonny) Lathe for all the help and care he gave Charlie in Florida. Many who knew him will remember Charlie Arbor for his devotion to young people, his generous spirit, and his wry smile. According to his wishes there will be no public ceremony.

I was sad to learn of Charlie's passing. He was the Principal that I worked for at Cony High School as a Biology and Earth Science Teacher in the late 60's and early 70's. He was a fair and generous man and a good Principal. He will be missed.

Thanks to and many fond memories of the man who took over the reins from Horace Croxford, saw my class of 1966 through double sessions, the death of a President, and successfully brought us to a new High School Facility. In those years, he helped develop a State Champion Basketball team and a 75th Chizzle Wizzle that ended the Black face minstrel in Augusta.

He is one heck of a man among men.

Mr. Arbor was my principal at Cony High School. He was very caring and considerate to the students and his office was always open to any student who may have just needed "down time". He will be missed by all who knew him.

When I heard about Charlie's passing it took me back to the fall of 1968. I was a young chemistry teacher at Cony High School. Charlie was my principal - a great principal, and a kind and encouraging man with a charming smile. This world is a colder place without Charlie's presence.

Mr. Charlie Arbour better known as "Charlie" was to me one of the finest person I ever knew. My coach at old Hallowell High and also a fine teacher as I remember. His wife also was one of the best. Thank you coach for all you did and the wonderful memories. Lindy Black
