Daniel Dunn Obituary

Daniel Earl Dunn

Stuart - Our dearest Daniel Earl Dunn, born January 10, 1961 in Evanston, Illinois, passed on Sunday, December 20, 2020, in Stuart, Florida. He is survived by his wife Maria Vallecillo-Dunn and his two daughters Giselle "Gigi" Maria and Gabriella "Gaby" Daniela.

He also leaves behind his mother Marjorie Louise (Kaaz) Dunn, his father William Arthur Dunn, step-mother Rebecca (Walter) Dunn, sisters Liz Dunn, Chris Ellen (Dunn) Valencia, and Virginia (Dunn) Kerr and their spouses Charles "Dusty" Pearsall, Juan Carlos Valencia, and Andrew Kerr. He was surrounded by a large, extended family including parents-in-law Alejandro and Conchita Vallecillo, sisters-in-law Conchita (Vallecillo) Tilton, Ana Paula Vallecillo, brothers-in-law Jose Vallecillo, Ron Tilton, and Alex Vallecillo, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Above all, Dan will be remembered for his fierce love of family.

Dan was a brilliant man, a lifelong seeker of knowledge with a keen interest in history, language, medicine, and current events. From his undergraduate days playing Ultimate Frisbee on the green at his beloved University of Virginia to his MD PhD program at the University of Chicago and residency at Stanford, Dan was a true academic. He made lifelong friends who share his quick wit and love of spirited debate.

Dan became the devoted father of two beautiful scholars who were his everything. He thrived on challenging their minds, hearing about their schoolwork, and guiding their college preparations. He took great pride in their accomplishments at school and in their extracurriculars too. May they always remember the twinkle in his bright blue eyes and his deep laugh, especially when regaling them with stories of Big Al, frozen Big Macs, and other great teenage antics.

The girls may not remember traveling to Hawaii to watch Dan play in the World Ultimate Frisbee Championship when they were little, but they certainly know of his love for travel and adventure: tandem biking in Canada, skiing in Montana, hiking the mountains of Peru, snorkeling the Galapagos, fording streams in Iceland, and eating paella in Spain - always planning the next great trip before the last was even finished. He embraced living large and being surrounded by friends and family who will always remember his generosity, especially with his $2 bills.

Back in Stuart, he dominated the tennis courts in his infamous tie-dye shirts. He leaves behind a supportive group of men and women who share his love of the sport and will certainly miss waging on his t-shirt changes.

After working in medical research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and training medical students at the University of Utah, Dan dedicated himself to research analytics at Dunn Capital in Stuart, Florida. He was grateful to have worked with a supportive team there.

Finally, Dan was blessed with a wife who matched him in spirit, wit, generosity, and loyalty. She was his perfect partner, and they had an unforgettable adventure together.

Services:

As Covid redefines the ways in which we mark life events, we have yet to determine how we will formally celebrate Dan's life and memory. The family requests that on Dan's birthday, January 10th, you unite in spirit with others around the country to celebrate Dan in a way that feels authentic to your friendship with him: play tennis, share a nice dinner, open a special bottle of wine, watch your favorite episode of Seinfeld, or perhaps have a slice of banana cream pie.

Finally, Dan was a devoted blood donor, and we would love for you to donate blood or plasma - and even join a bone marrow registry - in his honor once you feel safe doing so. We wonder if all together we could match or exceed the amount of blood that Dan, our favorite Hematologist and reader of Blood magazine, has donated in his lifetime!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the In Memoriam account at The Community Foundation Martin Saint-Lucie. The funds will be granted to causes selected by his daughters.

I was saddened to hear the news of Dan´s passing. I had the privilege of working with him and Pierre at Dunn Capital in the early 2000s and got to know him well. I remember the Ultimate Frisbee matches in Hawaii and pics of the family home after a hurricane! He was a brilliant mind, but more importantly a fine man of the highest integrity. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Take Care.

I struggled quite a bit with the news of Dan’s passing. During our MD/PhD days I looked up to him quite a bit. Thoughtful, rational, careful with his interpretations of data—these qualities helped guide me in my training. Then there was the fun—food, wine, tennis, friends—amazing times! I have great memories—going wine tasting after Asilomar, the famous San Francisco photo with Dan and Gerry at Wendy’s house, getting seasick deep sea fishing, driving his new car back to Chicago, visiting with our son Alex in Stuart, discussing the latest cancer immunotherapy data. It’s these memories that I will cherish. Dan was a special human being. And he will be missed.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of Dan. Words cannot begin to express the sadness. I will remember Dan going up in the plane with my husband Ed to take photos of the St Lucie River - a river that Dan so loved. May love fill us during this difficult time. Please know Dan, Maria, and the entire family are in Ed and my prayers.

I was shocked to hear the tragic news as I have lost a passionate, sharp minded and always curious colleague. Daniel gave me and my family a warm-hearted welcome to his home and country very shortly after my arrival to the USA and made me feel welcomed and respected. His passion and attention to detail was fascinating and I will always remember him as a person to ask if I had a question. He will be deeply missed.

I have lost a great colleague who mastered the skills most valued within the industry we operate. A sharp mind, a critical thinker, someone who would give you his honest opinion when asked and who had the capacity of thinking outside the box to come up with new ideas and solutions. Above all, I always felt a mutual respect when we had our conversations about research during my many visits to the DUNN offices over the years. Daniel will be deeply missed. Caroline and I will be thinking of the DUNN family at this difficult time.

I am still trying to process this loss of such a vibrant and talented guy. I will miss visiting with him during my trips to Stuart and am greatly disappointed that I will never have the opportunity to play tennis with him again. He was certainly a top notch competitor. I will continue to pray that the Lord brings comfort to Daniel's family, friends, and the many others who loved him.

Having an office next to Daniel for over 10 years, I got to know him on many levels, personal and professional. He was a scientist committed to truth and lifelong learning. I found that he enjoyed teaching what he knew and he was patient when the student was in over his head. I enjoyed his quirky sense of humor and his funny observations. And I especially appreciated his love for his family, which came through in hundreds of little stories about the weekend or recaps of vacations. I have kids the same age and it was fun comparing notes about the stages of parenthood. It was always clear how much joy he gained from Maria and "his girls". I will miss Daniel and all the casual interactions we had that make a friendship.

I was one of Dan's tennis buddies of which there were many. Quick witted and dry, made you think. The thing that sticks out is once you got by the exterior, there was a genuine friend that you could count on. I and the tennis community will miss him greatly. RIP brother and until we meet again. God Bless to Maria and the family. Praying for you.

I lost a great friend and colleague. At work, his intelligence, love of rigor, and fine wit will be missed. As a friend, I’ll always remember the countless lunches where we exchanged ideas about life, cinema, books and language. There he often displayed his love for his wife and daughters and his pride in their accomplishments.

We had neighboring offices separated by a glass wall on the research “aquarium” at Dunn Capital. If I presented him a new idea, he was always ready to discuss it, support it, or, what was even more appreciated, challenge it or show potential pitfalls or room for improvement. It’ll be sad going forward looking across the glass and not seeing his tall figure. He’ll be deeply missed.
