George Marta Obituary

GEORGE MARTA 1910 - 2007 Born in Philadelphia, PA, to parents Gaitano and Alfonsina Marta, George was one of nine children. His father supported his family as a fresco artist. During the Depression, George attended Drexel University, while working several jobs and playing varsity sports. He received his degree in civil engineering. While in college, he taught himself to play the piano; well into his nineties, he could still entertain everyone with his musical talent. For twenty five years, he was Chief Engineer in Research and Development at E.R. Squibb & Sons. An early advocate for controlling industrial air pollution, he became the first Commissioner of Air and Water Pollution for the State of New Jersey. His work earned his company a national environmental award. A champion golfer, he and his wife, Ruth, retired to Vero Beach, Florida. Folks at the Isles of Vero Beach remember George as a "real charmer," a man who was always cheerful, uncomplaining, and grateful for even the smallest kindness. He was a devoted husband and father, and is survived by his daughters Lynne Marta of California, and M.J. Orcutt of Washington State, and son- in-law Ron Orcutt.
