George Stewart Obituary

George Stewart

Stuart - George H. Stewart died May 28, 2021 at the Treasure Coast Hospice, Harper House, Stuart, FL. He was born in 1931 at Altoona, PA, graduated from Tyrone (PA) high school in 1949 and obtained a degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in 1953. From 1954-57 he served as an officer in the Supply Corps of the U.S. Navy.

He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1959 while working for Price Waterhouse & Co., later becoming Controller of Rowe Manufacturing Company in Whippany, N.J. He joined Geigy Chemical Corporation in Ardsley, NY in 1966 and was Vice President and Treasurer of CIBA-GEIGY Corporation from 1972 until his retirement in 1994.

He was a Director of the Hastings-On-Hudson (NY) Federal Savings & Loan Association and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Whitehall Mutual Funds Group in New York City from 1994-2003.

He was Treasurer and, later, President of the Whippoorwill Club in Armonk, NY, where he was a member for twenty years. He was a member of Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club from 1990-95 before becoming a resident member of Stuart, Florida's Willoughby Golf Club, serving as Treasurer and a Board Member from 1999-2004. From 2014, he lived with his wife at Sandhill Cove in Palm City where he was Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Residents' Council.

He was a Director of the Westchester/Putnam Counties (NY) United Way and, for many years, was the United Way of Martin County's Community Coordinator at Willoughby. He was a Vice President and Director of the Financial Executive Institute's Northeastern Area.

He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Betsy Bratton Stewart, who died in 2020. Survivors are his daughters, Linda Stewart of Cambridge, MA, and Jennifer Foley of Cornelius, NC, along with three grandchildren - Adam, Rachel and Libby; and father-in-law to Joe and Tom.

As he has requested, there will be only a family memorial service. Friends who would like to make contributions in his memory can direct them to the United Way of Martin County, 10 SE Central Parkway, Stuart, FL 34994.
