H. Walker Obituary

H. Webster Walker, III

Vero Beach, FL

H. Webster Walker, III died peacefully at home on May 21. He was beloved by friends, family and the many communities in which he was engaged. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life, and they adored their father and "Gampy."

Web was born September 4, 1953 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Harry Webster Walker II, and Alethea Kunhardt Walker. During his youth, he lived in places as diverse as Brazil, Winnetka, Illinois, and Southport, Connecticut. He brought his joy of life and infectious laugh to all of them.

Web's career spanned business, banking and the citrus industry. His retirement from his SunSweet Fruit company left customers bereft of the nation's best citrus.

Web was a philanthropist, who contributed his energy, goodwill and resources to many projects that benefited young people and the less fortunate. He was leader in the Orchid Island Rotary Club, and he served on several foundations.

Nobody wore a Hawaiian shirt with shorts at a fundraiser or party better than Web did. He loved life in Florida. And it showed.

Web passionately cheered on his kids - and their friends - as they excelled in sporting events and in life itself. He always lifted his voice on their behalf, often much to the chagrin of the referees. Yet, he calmly managed to be there for friends and family in difficult situations.

Web could give you a bear hug and a sarcastic comment at the same time. He had a subtly quiet - yet deeply rooted appreciation - for life, his family and the home they built together.

He graduated from The Harvey School, The Berkshire School, and Florida Southern College.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Holland Walker, and their large and loving family, who will miss him every day: Jane Walker Blake (Tommy), Camp Walker (Michelle) and Holland Walker (Steven Josephs), along with four beloved grandchildren: Hollis, Henry and Webster Blake and William Camp Walker. His sister, Antoinette Hamner (George), and brother, Gilford Walker, along with seven nieces and nephews also survive him. So does his beloved dog, Charlie.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, his sister, Alethea Walker Overholser, and his terracotta warrior dog, Jack.

Funeral services will be held at Community Church in Vero Beach at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 29.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given in Web's memory to the Vero Beach Dog Park (www.verobeachdogpark.com), where he spent part of every day, the Education Foundation (www.edfoundationirc.org) and ARC (ww.arcir.org).

Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

A smart soccer player who always took the time to teach the other players on his team, and did so with a passion. A brother in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, that everyone endeared themselves to. An exceptional human being who had a profound, and positive influence many lives. All of us from Florida Southern College who had the privilege to know him, will miss him dearly.

I first met Web in the fall of 1969 when we were wee freshmen classmates at Berkshire School. He was always a happy presence at the school. Easy to laugh, affable, friend to everybody, a great classmate. Somewhere along the way he got the nickname Goober which was goofy and lovable. I last saw him at our 35th reunion. Everyone greeted him the same way, yelling Web! and hugs and smiles and laughs followed. We will have our 45th reunion in two weeks and I am saddened that he will not be among us. There will be a Service of Remembrance on Sunday morning. I know all his classmates there will attend and share their fond memories of a great guy. My condolences to the Walker family.

To my dearest friend Ellen. Jane, Camp, and Hollis as well. There are no words worthy of the sadness you all must be feeling. Web was one of the most special people I have had the pleasure of calling a friend. From the first time I met him (screaming about the water on the floor at Arbor Drive), to the day he left CT in the Ford Focus packed for your new life in FL. (I also told you not to say anything about Jane falling down the garage steps), he was always there for not only me, but for all who knew him. I will miss him dearly, and if there's anything you need the phone is close by. We certainly lost a truly good one.

Dear Ellen, Camp, Janie, Holly and the rest of the huge family of Web Walker,

When I was signing onto this page to post my thoughts, I was asked to choose my relationship with Web. I chose "Friend". I know we were family, too. However, "Cuz" was much more than a distant cousin to me. We had a relationship that I cherished ... almost like brothers. We could discuss, argue, and be loud and boisterous about almost any subject. On those occasions where we disagreed, we agreed to do so without any harm to the love we felt for each other. Web was one of the best listeners I've ever known. He would absorb my side of any discussion, and acknowledge the worth of that viewpoint ... even if it diverged from his own.

I was so very sad to learn of his death so soon after we had shared a great time in Nashville at a board meeting. I will miss his huge laugh. I will miss his bear hugs. I will miss his loud greeting of "CUZ!". I will miss his wisdom. I'll just plain miss him. Some people in our lives make a huge impact, and Web Walker was one of my people!

Much love to you all,
Doug

To Ellen and the entire Walker Family, our hearts are heavy as we learned of the passing of Web so unexpectedly. Rotary was not the same yesterday, we all sat around very somber and told stories that made us both laugh and cry as we touched on what we lost.....a great friend, mentor, contributor, philanthropist, hard worker, selfless, lovable, funny, opinionated man, and a true Rotarian in every way. Our club will never be the same without him, we will keep his memory alive as we all move forward together. Our condolences to you and your family, know that we are all thinking about you.
