Hugh Kirkpatrick Obituary

Hugh Russell Kirkpatrick, Jr.

Vero Beach, FL

Hugh Russell Kirkpatrick Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 28th at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. Hugh was 81.

Hugh was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to parents Hugh R. Kirkpatrick & Katharine North Kirkpatrick. He attended the Pingry School (class of 1955), The Lawrenceville School (PG program), and Princeton University (class of 1959). While at Princeton he was also a member of the University Cottage Club. Immediately following his graduation in June of 1959, Hugh married Frances Grauer. After a brief stint with the Bank of New York, Hugh began his 36-year career at IFF International Flavors and Fragrances. In 1996 he retired from his last role as President of IFF Fragrance Company Worldwide. Retirement was a catalyst for change and an opportunity for new adventures & hobbies. Moving from New Vernon, New Jersey to Vero Beach, Florida and Boone, North Carolina, his passion for golf began.

Hugh will always be known for his deep love and commitment to family. "Time spent together, was time well spent!!" Sailing on Barnegat Bay, summers in Mantoloking, New Jersey, being the world's greatest horse show dad, and fabulous travels... he was always active and always present. He was an amazing son, husband, father and friend.

Hugh was a member of The Mantoloking Yacht Club - Mantoloking, New Jersey, The Princeton Club - New York, New York, Indian River Club - Vero Beach, Florida, Hound Ears Club - Boone, North Carolina and Riomar Country Club - Vero Beach, Florida.

Hugh is survived by his wife Frances G. Kirkpatrick, daughter Laura Hayward Kirkpatrick (Beth Ann Walters) of New York City and Stanfordville, New York, son Hugh Russell Kirkpatrick III (Paula) of Sebastian, Florida, brother Hebert Scott Kirkpatrick (Leslie) of Essex, Connecticut, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hugh and I enjoyed many of our senior years together at Indian River Club, often on the golf course. What we also had in common but did not realize were military-connected honeymoons. In 1959 his and Francie's honeymoon included driving to his first Army duty station in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Four years earlier I had paved the way with my honeymoon drive from the church in Flint, Michigan to the Naval base in Coronado, California. I do wish we had known of our similar starts to the following wonderful years. It would have provided the material for some unique conversations.

I will always remember Hugh from my short tenure at IFF. He was a natural leader and a gentleman. I thank him for all he did for me.

While golfing and socializing with Hugh for many years, I realized how lucky I was to be counted among his friends. And I also knew that I was unlucky not to have known him for the first 60 years of our lives. Miss you, Hughie.
