John Rollins Obituary

John William Rollins, Jr. John William Rollins, Jr. passed away at his home in Santa Fe, NM on July 3, 2013. He was 71. A Delaware businessman for most of his life, Mr. Rollins received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Finance from Southern Methodist University and an MBA from Northwestern University in 1965. After one year in New York City with the Registrar & Transfer Co., Mr. Rollins returned to Delaware to become Director, then President of Rollins Truck Leasing Corp. (RLC), a company founded by his father, the late John W. Rollins, Sr. This marked the beginning of a long and distinguished business career where he held numerous senior positions for many family run businesses, including Chairman of the Board of Matlack, Inc, a bulk transport company, Senior Vice Chairman of the Board of Rollins Environmental Services Inc, and founding member of the Boards of Directors of Dover Motorsports, Inc. and Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment, Inc., all Delaware companies which he helped take public and are listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Of all of his professional responsibilities, however, he was always proudest of his accomplishments as President and CEO of Rollins Truck Leasing Corp, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. He devoted most of his professional life to growing the company and was the driving force in transforming what began as a small auto leasing operation into the nation's third-largest truck rental and leasing company, employing 4,300 individuals and servicing more than 50,000 vehicles from 267 branch locations throughout the United States. During this time, he made a point to visit all of the company's locations on a regular basis, knew many of his employees personally, and went to great lengths to provide the best possible benefits for his employees, long after many companies had given them up. He was strengthened daily by the devotion and loyalty of every Rollins employee, and took great pride in embodying the company precept, "At Rollins, we do what we say we're going to do." Mr. Rollins also served on President Nixon's Economic Advisory Council, was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), and served on the Board of Trustees of Southern Methodist University from 1988-1995. In addition to his professional life, he had many personal passions. He was a devoted family man. His commitment to serving his family was ever present and he dedicated much of his life to helping not only his immediate family, whom he adored, but also his cousins and extended family with whom he remained very close. He was always there when you needed him. Having grown up in Lewes, Delaware, he developed a love for the sea at an early age. He became an avid salt water fisherman and spent many years owning and restoring custom Rybovich sport fishing boats. During his retirement, he sought refuge travelling on his boat with family and friends from the coast of Maine to Mexico and many, many points in between. He became well known in the sport-fishing community and developed deep and long-lasting friendships with other custom boat owners and members of the Rybovich family. Mr. Rollins also had a passion for the arts. He was a bluegrass musician early in life and became a long time collector of Martin guitars. His love of opera and classical music took him around the world in pursuit of the performers, festivals and music he loved deeply. Most recently, he was an active supporter of the Santa Fe Opera Company. He touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and numerous colleagues from the Rollins businesses. Mr. Rollins was predeceased by his father, John W. Rollins, Sr., his mother Katharine J. Muir, and his brother James E. Rollins. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Diana Dukes Rollins, their two children, John W. Rollins III (Carin), and Fontayne Rollins Fox (Stephen), and four grandchildren, Davitt R. Fox, Ryan B. Fox, Tinsley G. Rollins and John W. Rollins IV. He is also survived by his brothers Patrick E. Rollins (Faye) of Houston, TX, Ted W. Rollins (Holly) of Greenville, SC, Jeffrey W. Rollins (Kim) of Wilmington, Michael M. Rollins (Caroline) of Wilmington, Marc M. Rollins (Ashlee) of Wilmington, and sisters Catherine Rollins Searby (Dan) of San Francisco, CA, Michele M. Rollins II of Wilmington, and Monique Rollins (Marco) of Florence, Italy, and nine nieces and nephews. Also dear to him were his beloved first cousins, Randall (Peggy) and Gary Rollins of Atlanta, stepmother Michele M. Rollins, niece Jamie Rollins Flynn, and their families. Friends and family are invited to join a celebration of the life of John W. Rollins, Jr. at the Wilmington Country Club on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 10am. This occasion brings forth another opportunity to reflect through my times with John Rollins. Often I think about the two occasions my group was asked to entertaining at the home of John & Diana. Always before our night concluded John would always sit in with us to sing a song. It was a pleasure for us and his the guest loved it. He always made us feel welcome and a good time was had by all.
I have said this before, one of my biggest thrilles was having the opportunity to play one of his Martin guitars. They were all collectors items, all special made, with very unique features.
I recall on one occasion John and Diana came to hear our band play in lower Delaware. They rode down on John Motorcycle. That really made me feel special.
My prayer is that Diana is doing well, and let me say the nine years I was Credit Manager for Rollins Truck Leasing, well, it was the best job I ever had.
Thank you John and the Rollins Family. God Blessings to all.

Cherish your wonderful memories and hold them close to your heart as you journey through this very difficult time. As I read what many have shared, I smile and think "What a remarkable man!" and an incredible impact he has placed in the hearts of many! The best memories of my professional career are of my time spent in the "Ivory Tower" as a member of the "Rollins Family". I worked for and with both JWR,Sr, and JWR,Jr, at Rollins International , Rollins Truck Leasing and Rollins Auto Leasing and the various Rollins Companies from 1970 through the mid 80's. I became professionally close to and a personal admirer of both men.

John Jr. guided, cared about and truly considered employees as family and treated them accordingly. From those days when we were headquartered on the second floor of the Talleyville shopping center to the top floors of the Rollins Building...memories of working with John will forever bring a smile to my face and a warmth in my heart...now more then ever.

My most sincere wishes for that same smile and warm heart to Diana, John III, Fontayne, the grand kids and all relatives ,friends and associates as they think of John forever.

All of us who knew him, have truly lost a friend. After I was diagnosed with cancer, he called me a few months ago to make sure I had everything I needed ...that is the kind of person he was. My days working for John and being a part of the "Rollins Building Family" will be forever treasured.

John provided a very pleasurable experience for me. I was called to his office and I knew not what to expect. He just wanted me to play one of his beautiful Martin Guitars. An experience I'll not soon forget. He always made me feel special and he really didn't have to. As the Rollins Truck Leasing Credit Manager, I pray that memory of the those who knew him will be a source of comfort at this time for Diana and the family.

An incredible person!
In 1987, we moved from the state of OH to the state of DE for a new job at ICI. One day while going to work, my car stalled out at Sharpley and Foulkstone Rd. A guy in a new car stopped to ask if he could help. I said yes, you could help me push the car to the side of the road. After pushing the car over, he asked me if I needed a ride. I said yes. I thanked him and introduced each other. He said that his name was John Rollins. I asked him if he lived in Sharpley, he said no, Chadds Ford. I asked him if he worked at ICI, then he said, you must be new in town. I said yes, we just moved from Ohio. Since I worked in the Rollins Building we drove to it drove underneath in the parking lot, went up in the elevator and he gave me his card saying that if I needed any help to call him. What an incredible person to think of other people. I will pray for him.

I am saddened to hear of John's passing. We were just watching old slides of Lewes over the weekend and had one of "Johnny" and Frank on the beach in front of the Dukes cottage. John gave me my first job out of grad school and "had my back" when I got fired from Matlack in 1986. He was the definition of class. My thoughts go out to the entire family, but especially Patrick and Diana. Hope you see this.

My father grew up across the street from John Jr. on Lewes Beach as a child. He never forgot where he came from and always kept in touch with Lewes and those he grew up with.
Here's the kind of man Mr. Rollins was--the next door neighbor John Jr. grew up with-as an adult fell while building a house and broke his pelvis. The poor guy was uninsured at the time(as so many self employed were).
Mr. Rollins stopped by Beebe Medical
Center to visit--told accounts payable to "send me any bills for his hospital stay"!!
My condolences to his family in this difficult time.

I only got to know John in the last couple of years.

He was a member of the Club at Las Campanas. He approached me at the club asking if I rode motorcycles as I was wearing a mc t shirt that day. Since then we have rode together during the summer months.

Last Christmas we were very touched when he called wishing us the best of the Holidays (how many people do that anymore!).

John was such a character. I will miss our lunch conversations at the Taos Diner.

We will miss him.
