Kelby Kuney Obituary

Kelby Webster Kuney

Sebastian, FL

Kelby Webster Kuney, 72, of Sebastian, Florida passed away the evening of Monday, November 5th after a sudden illness.

Kelby was born October 21, 1946, to Donald and Dorothy Kuney and grew up on their poultry, livestock and pony farm in Canoga, NY with his brother, Lynn. After graduating from Mynderse Academy, Kelby studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he met his first wife, Janet Payne. The couple settled in Seneca Falls, NY and raised two children, Timothy and Kathleen.

A born entrepreneur, Kelby launched Springbrook Grain Co., a local grain merchandising company, from his home basement. Over its existence, the company grew to include Canoga Transportation and Fox Run Recycling, and it was a major player in the northeast commodities market.

Kelby and Janet's marriage ended, and he married Priscilla Manzari of Seneca Falls, NY in 1991. They soon moved to Florida to care for his father, Donald Kuney. There, Kelby started U.S. Transportation, a freight brokerage company that has grown to over eight offices and 35 employees nationwide.

Kelby's drive and determination in his work carried through in his personal life. He loved riding his bikes, traveling in his RV, and sharing good food and wine with friends and family. He mastered the art of the mobile office; working many summers from his RV as he traveled the country with his wife and their two dogs. In recent years, he particularly enjoyed visiting national parks and exploring bike trails across the United States.

Kelby is survived by his wife, Priscilla; brother, Lynn Kuney; son, Tim Kuney; daughter, Kathleen Murdock and three grandchildren.

Services will be held on December 1, 2018 at 10AM at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca Falls, NY. Immediately following the service, friends and family will have a party to celebrate his life. There will also be gathering at the Yellow Dog Cafe' in Melbourne Florida on January 19th 2:00pm-4:00pm. If you wish to attend, please RSVP at Irina Roche' 772-664-7770 Ext:124 or email: [email protected] In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Kelby may be sent to the H.A.L.O. Although I lost touch with Kelby once he moved from Seneca Falls, I have fond memories of him when he lived there. We had lots of fun times - he was one of the nicest people you would ever want to know. My sympathies to his family.

I remember growing up down the road from the Kuneys, and all the time we spent looking at the horses. Kelby's horse, Bint, was boarded at our place long enough that when Kelby decided it was time to keep her home she would jump the fence, come down Rt. 89, trot up our driveway, and head straight for the barnyard. Many times she'd bring Preacher with her. Kelby would call to let us know that she was coming to visit and he'd be down later to get her. He was the nicest young man, especially to a little horse-crazy pest like me.
Treasure the memories that you have, and the memories that others share. You are all in my prayers.

Kelby leaves quite a legacy not only in the business world but with his family. We hope wonderful memories will bring comfort to you all at this difficult time. Memories of Christmas Eve at Nana and Bud's, with Aunt Pete at the piano, will make make me smile.
