Lawrence White Obituary

LAWRENC E KERMIT (RED) WHITE Colonel Red White, U. S. Army (Retired) died April 5, 2006 at Indian River Memorial Hospital. Colonel White was born in Union City, Tennessee on June 10, 1912, the son of Dora Ridings Hogan and Raymond E. White. Raised in rural Tennessee, he gained admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1933. On June 26, 1937, then Lieutenant White married the former Elizabeth Jane (Susan) Flint of Saint Louis, Missouri, beginning a life together of 62 years. Mrs. White passed away in Vero Beach on April, 2 1999. Colonel White served with distinction in the Pacific as an Infantry Regimental Commander during World War II where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster) and Bronze Star for Valor. Retired for wounds in 1947, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency at its inception, retiring in 1972 as its Executive Director. During his tenure there, his service to the country was recognized by the award of the National Civil Service League Career Service Award and the Distinguished Intelligence Medal. In 1997, the Agency recognized him with the Trailblazer Award as one of the most important 50 contributors to the CIA's success. Moving from Washington, D.C. to Vero Beach in 1975, Colonel and Mrs. White enjoyed retirement and membership in the Vero Beach Country Club, summers in New Piasa Chautauqua near Saint Louis and hosting children and grandchildren in both places. Colonel White is survived by three children: Susan White Yahraes of Vero Beach, Florida, Lawrence K. White, Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina, James T. White of Laporte, Colorado, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He will long be remembered not only for his accomplishmen ts and dedication to family, but also for his wonderful stories and the ability to find friendship wherever he went. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Blvd, Vero Beach, Florida 32960 at 10:00 Am on Monday, April 10, 2006. Contributions in memory of Colonel White may be made to: New Piasa Chautauqua Chapel (Tax Deductible) New Piasa Chautauqua Elsah, Illinois 62028 Visiting Nurse Association Hospice 1130 35th Lane Vero Beach, Florida 32960 Internment will be alongside his wife at West Point, New York, at a later date.
