Michael FitzGerald Obituary

Michael David FitzGerald
Aug. 24, 1952 - Apr. 15, 2018
Scotts Valley
Much-loved family man, friend, poet, mentor, pastor and avid baseball fan, Michael died following a lengthy process of living with glioblastoma. With his classic wit and wisdom, Michael chronicled his journey on Facebook for family and friends. He shared his life ponderings in his blog and in two lyrical poetry collections, Footfalls and Wild Bouquet. Michael was a deep thinker and an insightful person. His sense of humor brought smiles and laughter. He was a scholar athlete and graduate of Sammamish High School, an alum of the University of Washington, and a graduate of California State University Sacramento, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. He completed his M.Div. at North Park Seminary in Chicago, his Clinical Pastoral Education at Sutter Hospitals in Sacramento and his spiritual direction training at the Mercy Center.
Over the course of thirty years, Michael served congregations in Mercer Island, Washington; Rochester, Minnesota, and Scotts Valley, California. His sermons were filled with humorous and thoughtful applications and shared with people across the country and around the world. He was a spiritual director and mentor to many; an insightful poet and author. He cherished and loved his family, cared for his friends, and cheered passionately for his favorite baseball teams: the San Francisco Giants and all the teams his grandchildren, friends, and family members played for each season.
Born in the Navy town of Bremerton, Washington to Patricia and John (deceased) FitzGerald of Bellevue, Washington; husband of forty-two years to Cynthia Sue Towne FitzGerald; son-in-law of Shirley and Edward Towne of Sacramento; father of Amy (Chris) and Lindsay (Thomas); grandfather to Aaron, Brendan, Siri, and Domanic. In the months of his illness, Michael appreciated his teams of caring friends, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and extended family up and down the west coast, across the country and on the other side of the Atlantic.
The memorial service for Michael will be held at 1pm on Sunday afternoon, May 20th at Community Covenant Church in Scotts Valley, California. The family requests that memorial gifts be sent to the Cabrillo College Stroke and Disability Learning Center (6500 Soquel Dr., Aptos, CA 95066), where Michael led the Men's Group and later became a student. In lieu of sending flowers, please add a plant or tree to your environment that can live on in Michael's memory. Remember him when you watch a baseball game and cheer for a young person trying hard to play well in life.

My sympathies to the Fitzgerald family. I've thought of Mike often over the decades, and was deeply saddened to hear of his passing.
Mike and I had an early and instant connection, as we shared a birthday and were both left handed. At Phantom Lake elementary in Bellevue, we frequently sat near each other, with Mike ofte n maneuvering himself into the seat behind me. Once a month or so, he'd get little a twinkle in his eye. He'd start poking and prodding me until I'd have enough. When I turned around to tell him to knock it off, our teacher would inevitably yell at me, never Mike. We always had a good laugh afterwards about it. Happy to know he became a Pastor, because he had a devilish sense of humor as a boy.
I'll miss Mike, but treasure those memories of little league, cub scouts and riding bikes in our youth. Bill Woods - Seattle

My heart is saddened to read this. Prayers of peace go with you all. You inspired our young son when we moved to Rochester-"let's go see Pastor Mike." He enjoyed all your sermons and friendship before you moved to CA. Heaven is rejoicing along with many of Rochester Covenant's members, including our family member Rob Wixon. Blessings ~ Mary and Kerry Wixon.

Dear Cindy & Family,

I am so saddened and shocked to learn of Mike's passing! My thoughts and prayers are with you all. We have lost touch since I moved from Rochester to Phoenix in 1998. He was my pastor and Cindy you were my counselor. You both helped me greatly! Yes, our passion for baseball and trust in God will be there forever......

God's Peace,
Darrel Christenson

Every day my mornings were made more meaningful by reading his FB posts. He allowed all of us to join him on his journey through this illness; sharing laughter and tears. I miss those daily connections. My heart goes out to Cyndy and family.
