Stanley Mayfield Obituary

STANLEY F. MAYFIELD Stanley F. Mayfield passed away peacefully at home Tuesday night after a courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Stan met Deborah Minton and they quickly fell in love. They married November 6, 1976. Stan graduated as an engineer from the University of Florida. A gifted problem solver, Stan put these skills to work through public service. He served the St. Lucie County Public School District, Indian River County School Board, the Florida House of Representatives and most recently won election to serve as Indian River County Tax Collector. Devoted to his wife and sons, and a fiercely loyal friend, Stan's capacity to achieve and overcome was only surpassed by his optimism and positive outlook. In the Florida Legislature Stan quickly became known as a "go to guy" for his creative thinking, dogged determination, and commitment to success. He shepherded model energy reform legislation and was a driven leader for property tax relief. With a disarming smile and an unassuming "whatcha been up to?" Stan was a true friend. His love for his family was enormous and Stanley was immensely proud of his three sons, Evan, Samuel, and Coleman. Outdoor enthusiasts all, the Mayfield's filled their days together on the water fishing, at the ball fields or around the pool at home, listening to country music and reviewing the day's trials and triumphs. Stan's life though short, was full and happy, laughter was abundant, and friends plentiful. His struggle ended and now at peace his family takes comfort knowing he has impacted so many lives in such meaningful ways. Stanley is survived by his wife, Deborah; sons, Evan, Samuel, and Coleman; his mother, Virginia Mayfield of Orlando; sisters, Peggy (Larry) Booker of Orlando, and Rhonda (Mike) Arnwine of Cartersville, GA; father and mother-in-law, Captain Tony and Yvonne Minton of Pensacola, FL; three brothers-in-law, Danny (Jenny) Minton, Steven (Marty) Minton and J.T. Minton, all of Pensacola; and two sisters-in-law, Diana Mills and Cheryl (Doug) Tait, also both of Pensacola. Stan was predeceased in death by his father, Samuel Mayfield. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3rd, at the First Baptist Church, Vero Beach. A Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 4th, at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jim Graves, officiating. A reception will immediately follow at Pointe West, Vero Beach. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fisherman's Landing Sebastian, P.O. Box 780126, Sebastian, FL 32978, in memory of Stanley F. Mayfield. Stan always had an open ear and was responsive to and supportive of the issues facing the judiciary when contacted. He was especially sympathetic to the issues relating to the mentally ill & substance addiction. He will be missed by so many; but leaves behind a great legacy of rewards. Godspeed Stan. His family is deep in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Mayfield family, It is with great sadness that we express our sympathies for the loss of such a special person as Represenative Stan Mayfiled. Every so often you meet a public servant who truly cares for others and that was Representative Mayfiled. As CEO of Alzheimer's Community Care I was most stressed in 2007 about a Alzheimer's bill that was to be removed from state funding and I was told that all my efforts were pointless by an agency representative. Representative Mayfield looked me in the eye and said "it is not over". He was right it was approved and passed by the legislature, and the funded project is helping hundreds of patients to this day, but his sincereity was so genuine that I will never forget that feeling of his caring. I know to say on behalf of our organization that if there is anything we can do to comfort you and your family cannot replace you loss, but please know that we too are most genuine and sincere with our expression of concern. Representive Mayfield's passing will leave a big void in our comunities and can never be filled.

One of my fondest memories of my childhood are the holidays when all of the family would gather at Big Mama's house and being able to spend time with all of my cousins, aunts and uncles. Stanley was always one of my favorite cousins because he always included me even though I was one of the "little brats" hanging around. I was so proud to say that he was a relative of mine when he was elected as a state representative. I know he served with honesty and integrity. You will be greatly missed!

I remember how excited my wife, Tahwana, was for me to meet her cousin Stanley. He was a tall male with a big smile and I'm sure he got that from his father, Uncle Foster. I only had the pleasure to see him a couple of times, but understood why she loved him and admired him so much. To Debbie and the boys and Aunt Virginia, Our hearts are heavy with your loss and ours too. We will all miss him. God Bless your family!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Stan's passing. Stan and I were childhood friends in Gonzalez, FL where we lived across the road from each other. We were very close during our days playing Little League Baseball and Football at Booth Field in Cantonment. We spent most all of our summers playing all sorts of games and sports from playing catch, to shooting hoops in the yard. We spent alot to time playing Army down the hill in the red clay. I am sure Stan's Mom remembers when we would get red clay dirt all over us. Although we lost contact with each other after he moved away, Stan was a great friend to me, an outstanding sportsman, and, as I now learn, a faithful husband, father and a great American. My sincere condolences to his entire family and loved ones.

I grew up with Stanley. He was always a helping hand and a great neighbor. We used to as youngsters, take rides down "the dirt road" in his Dads Corvair. Stanleys life achievements are vast and may God bless his entire family.

I will always remember the times growing up when my Brother Randy and I would look forward to the days when our Dads twin Brother Uncle Foster and his family would come to visit or when we would go to their home in Cantonment, FL. Stanley was our age and I would watch my Brother Randy and Stan do their thing and I would try to catch up. Those were the days. I will be miss our Cousin.
