Theodore Schwartz Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Schwartz

Stuart, FL

As a south Florida orthodontist for nearly four decades, Theodore "Ted" Schwartz brought a smile to the face of thousands of patients. To them, Dr. Schwartz was known as a caring, dedicated, and skilled orthodontist. To his family, he was a loving, intelligent, and principled husband, brother, father, and grandfather.

Dr. Schwartz died on December 21st surrounded by his family at a hospital in Stuart, FL. He was 71 and had been suffering from acute myeloid leukemia.

After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School, Dr. Schwartz attended the University of Florida. At the age of nineteen, exceptional academic performance enabled him to enter the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude (high honors).

During the Vietnam War, Dr. Schwartz served his country as a dentist, holding the position of Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he enrolled in Fairleigh Dickinson University and, after two years, graduated with a master's degree in dentistry, specializing in orthodontics. He again distinguished himself academically, finishing second in his class.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Schwartz served as president of the Greater Hollywood Dental Association where he had an office at the time. He was also elected as an officer of the East Coast District Dental Association and served as president of the Broward Dental Research Clinic from 1983-1984. He co-chaired the orthodontic department and taught dental materials. In 1985, Dr. Schwartz was chairman of the temporomandibular joint section of the clinic. After that, he held a number of other orthodontic and dental-related positions but concentrated on caring for the patients in his private orthodontic practice in Plantation.

In addition to his career, Dr. Schwartz was active in the Broward County community, sponsoring and coaching numerous athletic teams and youth activities.

He retired in 2011, moving to Sewall's Point, FL, where he enjoyed spending time walking his Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in Indian RiverSide Park, watching birds from his back deck, and solving Sudoku puzzles.

Ted Schwartz is survived by his devoted wife, Maureen; son, Evan Schwartz; two daughters, Alexandra Schwartz Vogel (Anthony J.) and Lori Sachs Counts (Ralph); and three grandchildren, Landon Counts, Kendyl Counts, and Kimber Counts.

Private services will be held.

Maureen, I am so sorry I just learned of Ted's passing when I returned home and got your Christmas card. I know you and Ted had a wonderful life together, but nothing can compensate for losing him so early. I hope you are finding some peace, and I would love to talk sometime. All my best wishes for you and your family and the baby to come! Love, Linda
