Bill was my idol in high school in Wilmington, and when I talked to him two years ago, more or less, he told me that the prostate cancer was getting away from him, just as it is with me now. He was a good guy, someone whom I looked up to very much. He led the state in scoring in football-wonderful athlete--and drove his "Fordalack" (a Ford with a Cadillac engine) before he crashed it. I just heard yesterday, Oct 16, of his death, and I am so sorry. I will always remember him fondly.

My heartfelt condolences on Bill's passing. Although we met only once, at Joe and Kerry's over Christmas in '07, Kerry always speaks of him fondly and from that I figure he must've been a heckuva guy. I'm really sorry for your loss and that he left you so soon!

Dear Donna and family, I have been praying for you as soon as Edward called Round Island. I always thought Billy was one of the neatest guys I knew. Having a monkey for a pet--that is really quite rare! My greatest joy is that I know that I will see him again in heaven!!! And that my dad is there and the two of them are probably telling stories from long ago! Knowing Billy is is heaven gives me such a peace and settles my heart. The pain of grief is there, but it is bearable knowing he is in the presence of the Lord. Please know that I will continue to pray for you as the Lord leads. Also, Please, yes Please return to the Island as soon as you can. We want to spend time with you there. Love, Sudee

Dearest Donna and Family,
Our hearts go out to you ALL, over Bill's sudden death. HOWEVER -- There is a lot of comfort in the fact he was on an adventure that was long awaited and anticipated.
We only first met when you joined the Treasure Coasters RV Group, in your "Gone With The Wind Bus". How fortunate we were to have such wonderful new friends and OH! how quickly 11 years have flown by.
It was evident right away, that everything Bill did was with enthusiasm. There was also a sense that - I've got to hurry to go here, or do this or that. He couldn't get to everything fast enough. "Time was fleeting."
"Bill's pinochle group" will never be the same. While the rest of us card players were being so rowdy - the pinochle group never said a word. There was toooo much competition (cannot make a mistake). Everyone pitied Bill's partner if they were losing.
Bill earned the reputation very quickly as the Ice Cream King (low carb of course). In fact, because of Bill - an ice cream social became a standard event at all rallies.
Space, nor time, does not permit more. Point being - dear ones - is that Bill himself would want his family to reflect on 41 Wonderful Years Of Memories, that he helped create. Others of us, will do the same with our years of friendship.
We are physically 1,100 miles away right now. But our thoughts and prayers are still with each of you during this difficult time.
With Love, Lynn & Ann Duvall

Donna, Tracy, Kerry: I was sad and shocked to hear of Bill's sudden passing. When I saw him at the 50th party in August, he was expressing his excitement to experience his Donkey ride down the Grand Canyon. I can't believe he's gone, but at least he was able to live out this experience. Bill was an unbelievable force in our young lives (as Donna you were too). Living on 5th Street and the kindness and nurturing environment you all gave us was never taken for granted. Bill was a unique individual and a kind and open-minded man. I hope he will look down on us all and smile at all the memories we have together. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time and we regret not being able to be with you at this difficult time. Remember we are here for you if you need us. Our deepest sympathies, I will never forget him. Love Jackie (Clark) Thompson, Bill and Family xox

Dear Donna, Tracy and Kerri,
I flew with Captain Bill on many occassion and have to admit he is one of the reasons I am where I am today! There is only wonderful memories of every flight with him (not to mention our happy hours at the bar at your house and "Shrimpers.") He was a "pilot's pilot!" He will live on forever through myself and every pilot he flew with and trained. The memories of his life are without a doubt.....priceless.
P.S. Kerri, I am the Donna you met in Key Largo when your Dad flew with my husband.

Bill....I will always remember you as the rough and tough pilot with the big-bellied laugh and the gentlest heart! I am so thrilled to have seen you and the 5th Street gang all together before you left us. You will be deeply missed. May you be in peace and know we are better for having had you in our lives. Donna, Tracey and Kerry......I cannot know what you are going through, but please know we are here for you....the Clark family and the "whole gang"! We love you! And we loved Bill. May you soon be able to remember only the good times of a long life well lived.

Dear Donna and family,
We are so sad to hear of Bill's passing. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers in the coming days.
Bill was always so full of life. He had a big influence over Mark and so many of the guys on 5th Street. He will be fondly remembered as a fun guy and wonderful friend. His legacy will be revered always.
We are both happy that we were so recently able to visit with one another and reminise about old times. We found Bill to be just as we remembered him, all these years, fun and crazy. What a blessing that get together was.
He will be sincerely missed.

Dear Donna, Tracy & Kerry:
I am sad & sorry to hear of your loss! Bill was a very kind man! It was always great going to your house in Pompano Beach, which turned out to be the "5th Street hangout", he was always so welcoming & very funny! I'm sure he will be missed by ALL who knew him. I leave you with the following to which I read for my father at his service.
Flying West:
I hope there's a place, way up in the sky, where pilot's can go, when they have to die ~ A place where a guy can buy a cold beer for a friend and comrade, whose memory is dear; A place where no doctor or lawyer can tread, nor a management type would ere by caught dead; Just a quaint little place; kind of dark, full of smoke, where they like to sing out loud and love a good joke; the kind of place where a lady could go and feel safe and protected, by the men she would know.
There must be a place where old pilots go, when their paining is finished, and their airspeed gets low, where the whiskey is old, and the women are young, and songs about flying and dying are sung, where you'd see all the fellows who'd flown west before and they'd call out your name, as you come through the door, who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad, and relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!"
And then through the mist, you'd spot an old guy you had not seen in years, though he'd taught you to fly. He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear, and say "Welcome, my son, I'm pleased that you're here. "For this is the place where true flyers come, "When their journey is over, and the war has been won. "they've come here at last to be safe and alone "From the government clerk and the management clone, "Politicians and lawyers, the Feds and the noise; "Where all hours are happy, and these good 'ole boys can relax with a cool one, and a well-deserved rest:
"This is heaven, my son ~ you've passed your last test!"
Always remember that he is never far from you and will always be in your hearts, as you have a special guardian that watches over you now!
My Sincerest Condolenses
