Donald Lemmons Obituary

Donald William Lemmons

July 27, 1939 - December 2, 2024

Donald William Lemmons, born on July 27, 1939, in Fairview, Okla. to Ralph and Stella Lemmons, was the youngest of nine children in a lively household with six boys and three girls. His father, a farmer and carpenter, eventually answered a calling to ministry, instilling values of faith and resilience in the family. Don's early years were spent in humble surroundings, where hard work, mischief, and adventure defined his childhood.

At just 14, Don left home to pursue independence, eventually landing in Gate, Okla., where he worked on a dairy farm for room and board, milking cows before and after school. It was during this time he met Clara, a spirited redhead who not only captured his heart but also helped him succeed in school. He often joked that he graduated fourth in his classout of only four seniors.

After high school, Don and Clara married and moved west to start their lives together. Settling in Kelso, Wash., Don embraced self-employment, working in sales and other trades. However, his true passion remained automobiles, which eventually expanded to include semis, airplanes, and race trucks. In 1966, Don founded Interstate Wood Products, starting with a modest fleet of semis hauling wood chips to mills. Through hard work and dedication, the business grew into a successful enterprise, providing for his family and creating opportunities for others.

Don's home life mirrored his work ethic: simple, frugal, and rooted in a strong sense of family. The couple's first home was literally moved on the back of a truck to property they had purchased, and over time, they built a life filled with love and shared dreams.

Beyond his business achievements, Don's greatest joy was his family. He was blessed with four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as a close-knit extended family and a community of friends. Don was a humble man who quietly gave back to his community, often anonymously. His generosity extended to mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, serving in Rotary, hosting foreign exchange students, serving on the Hospital Board, the Washington Truckers Association, Economic Development Association and volunteering at the Community House and RoseValley Friends church. A major donor to Lower Columbia Community College, Don was recently honored with an honorary degree in recognition of his contributions.

Don's life was marked by his love of sports, family gatherings and events. He attended countless ball games, wrestling matches, concerts, and recitalsnot just for his children and grandchildren, and great grandchildren but for other children who held a special place in his heart. His passion for life, business, integrity, and commitment to others will remain an enduring legacy.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; all but one sibling, John Lemmons; his daughter, Nancy Enriquez; and grandson, Jerome Lemmons. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Clara Lemmons; daughter, Eva Lemmons; sons, Dale Lemmons (Deanna) and Dean Lemmons; son-in-law, Frankie Enriquez; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family members.

Don's impact on his family, friends, and community will be felt for generations. His life exemplified the belief that, with determination and hard work, success is within reach for anyone, no matter their beginnings. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

A Celebration of Life will be held at RoseValley Friends Church, 1437 RoseValley Road, Kelso, WA 98626 at December 21, 2024 at 11 a.m. Live streaming will be made available thru the church website.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family, Clara. Don was a pillar of the community and arguably the kindest, most generous individual I´ve had the pleasure of knowing. Don had a burden to serve and support others with an extreme sense of humility. His philanthropic spirit and investment of himself was unmatched, yet he sought no recognition. His reward was seeing the positive impact on the face of a child, the well-being of a family in need, or the beautification of the community in which he lived. Don was known as a man of faith who never wore that faith on his sleeve. His actions always spoke louder than words, and his life should serve as an example for us all to aspire to. My life has been enriched having known Don. Rest in peace, my friend.

This is a tough loss for our community. I was lucky enough to get to know Don through his friend Frank Chandler on several week long quad ridding trips to Wallace Idaho. Don was fun to be around, so kind, laughed with us and sometimes at us, was deeply genuine, and a masterful example of a gentleman. I just waved to Don as we passed in our vehicles a few weeks ago on Talley Way, this is incredibly sad news. God thank you for Don, his example, and please Lord bless his family as they navigate an incredibly difficult time, Amen.
