Irene Snelling SmythIrene Snelling Smyth died June 25, 2007, in Littleton, N.H.Mrs. Smyth was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and immigrated with her parents to the United States as a young child. She was raised and educated in New York City. She traveled to the West Coast after graduating from the Katharine Gibbs School --- New York. In 1951 while working for Weyerhaeuser Co., she met and married Arthur V. Smyth. In 1970 her husband's position with Weyerhaeuser Co. initiated the relocation of the family to the Washington, D.C., area. They and their two daughters moved to the Wessynton area of Virginia where they were active in the community and the Mount Vernon Yacht Club for 35 years.Irene's joy was the world of creative art. Her career as an artist began when at age 13, she was befriended by Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.She was an accomplished artist and a member of The Virginia Watercolor Society, The Art League of Alexandria, The Potomac Valley Watercolorists and The Northern Virginia Watercolor Workshop.She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Arthur V. Smyth, and her daughter, Gretchen Lloyd. She is survived by her loving daughter, Lisa Jensen of Lyman, N.H., and her grandchildren, Hannah and Silas Ratico.A funeral service will be held in Virginia at a later date.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Art League, The Irene Smyth memorial fund, 105 North Union St., Alexandria, VA, 22314. Donations should be made to the attention of Alice Merrill.
