Mr. Garnarche was not only the best art teacher I had in Waltham schools but one of the nicest and most interesting teachers. He also taught us chess in the after-school SPARK program.

I've just returned from the Memorial held today at Kennedy. The auditorium was full of friends and family, many of whom shared great, funny and touching stories from Al's life. LOTS of his art, photos and gifts of his teachings were on display for all to see. It was a very eloquent way to capture such a marvelous person. My family has known his for many years and we know we are better for it.
P.S. A big gust of wind knocked over some flowers just as the memorial began, and when someone mentioned his superpowers, the electricity went off. He's still a very powerful presence. Smile whenever you think about him. (Or else!)

My family and I are deeply saddened to hear of Al's passing. We will keep his family, friends and the Waltham School community in our thoughts and prayers.
I first met Al about 30 years ago. I will always have great memories of our conversations about education and history, of his competitive spirit during our games of basketball and historical miniatures, but most of all his eloquence, his never give up attitude and his grace. He will be sorely missed.

Barbara, Susan, and Donald,
I was so saddened to read of Al's death and want you all to know that my deepest sympathy goes out to each of you. It's many years since I've seen your brother, but I'll keep him in my prayers.

During highschool Al was a good friend to me and some others that didn't quite fit in. One Thanksgiving he hosted a special costume dinner for fans of The Hobbit. We dressed as characters, made the food together and ate in his parents' basement. I was Frodo and Al was Gandalf , of course, and looked great!
At one time Al had a one-man kayak and liked to get on the Charles River to photograph birds.

I am sorry to hear of Al's passing. I am another of the Class of 70, a great vintage of Waltham High. I recall a hilarious double date for the Junior Prom. It was my first, last and only prom. Al had a kind spirit, and he obviously touched a lot of lives in a very positive way. May that spirit live on in the art of his students.

I am really sorry to hear of Al's passing. He was my friend and partner in crime at Waltham High School. I still remember when he came home from Sweden (junior year?) he taught me how to swear in Swedish. A truly great, great guy. My heart goes out to the family.

I am very sad to hear of Al's death. He and I graduated together and were good friends in high school, sharing many wonderful times in Mr. Nyren's art class. I remember he gave me a Mass Art t-shirt when I was expecting my first baby, which I wore until it wore out. That baby had the good fortune to have Al as her art teacher when she was in school. I still have pictures of him attending my first wedding way back when...so many people from that day are gone now...
My deepest condolences to the family...he'll always be remembered...

I had the pleasure of having had Mr. Garnache for Art at Kennedy in 1988 and 89. His passion for all things art was reflected in his teaching style. I remember that he took time to pay attention to each and every student, as well as getting to know them personally. My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Ganarache and family.

A man blessed with an immense capacity for observation, Al noticed, and appreciated so many common occurances so many of us take for granted. Al will of course be missed, however, his spirit has touched so many of those who cared for him as well as the fellow patients who he so endeared himself too. God bless you Al and keep on smiling...

All my memories of Mr. Garnache consist of fun, smiles and laughter. I was lucky enough to have had Mr. Garnache as an art teacher at South Jr. High for three years. After hearing of his passing I pulled out my year book that he inscribed, " It was the best of classes it was the worst of classes, I never had a class that did so little that I liked so much". I think that somes up my experience with the great Mr. Garnache. You will be missed!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Al's passing. This quirky little art teacher had a spirit and a humor about him that resonated across the years to myself, and countless other students. I was proud to know him, proud to have him teach my son, and greatly diminished by his passing. I will treasure his guidance forever.
