Andrew Cederbaum Obituary

Dr. Andrew I. Cederbaum, 69 EASTHAM- Dr. Andrew I. Cederbaum, dedicated husband, father, physician, and waffle savant, died suddenly after a brief illness. He was 69. Andy was born and raised in Brooklyn. He attended medical school at NYU, trained as a hematology /oncology fellow at UNC Chapel Hill, and served as an army doctor in Honolulu, HI. He then came to Massachusetts, practicing for seventeen years in Worcester and seventeen more on Cape Cod. He began his specialty in retirement in 2009. Andy was a brilliant and discerning physician who was admired by his colleagues and students. But Andy's passion was for his patients. He related to each with respect, compassion, and at times brutal honesty. He understood these relationships to be among the most important in his life. Andy had a genuine interest in discovering new activities and new people to incorporate into his routine. Retirement gave him the opportunity to bring his energy, intensity, humor, and chit-chat to the Cape community. Ever the teacher, Andy's recent years were a seminar on doing retirement right. On any given day, his agenda might include hiking, biking, tennis, book club, kayaking, sailing, abs class, skiing and, of course, napping. Andy's travels brought him from the Magellan Straights, to the Tasmin Sea, up the Andes Mountains and down the Croatian coast, but he always found his home on First Encounter. As committed as he was to his profession and to his friends, nothing matched Andy's devotion to his family. Andy inherited the role of patriarch from his father and took to it with grace, conviction and love. Andy's kids, Lori, Adam, Lisa, and Kate, counted their father as the go-to for sound advice and unflagging support in matters big and small. He was just getting started to do the same for his grandkids, Aidan, Lila, Andrew, and Alex. Andy was a welcoming father-in-law to Seamus and Karen, and the East Coast anchor for brother Stephen and all the West Coast Cederbaums. His wife, Anne Sigsbee, was his happy and privileged partner in it all. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m on Saturday, September 22nd at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church on Main Street in Brewster. Donations in Andy's memory may be made to Lower Cape Outreach Council at P.O. Box 665, Orleans, MA, 02653 or online at lcoutreach.org/donategoh.htm.

So sorry to hear of Andy's passing. I remember him from the Memorial days and the " chiefs' meetings". He took over for Peter Levine, but with his own style of amazing intelligence, insight and humor. I am one of many people he touched in his life.

We are so saddened by cousin Andrew's passing. Though we did not spend time together in our adult years we were kept up to date on your family through our dad, Harold. We are so glad we got to meet up with him and all of you in NY a year ago. We hope that you will forever be enveloped with his kindness and love and may his memory be a blessing to all.

Andy was an extraordinary physician and the most influential mentor during my training. My goal was to practice like Andy. He was always focused on the patient's needs and although not always patient himself his dedication to his patients was remarkable. We will miss you.

Andy was also a wonderful teacher, friend, and mentor. Patients and families still often recount his passion for excellent and compassionate care. Legions of doctors do a better job today because of Andy. May he rest peacefully.
