Athanasios Shocas Obituary

Athanasios "Arthur" Shocas, 91, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 17, 2007.

He was born in the village of Longo in Vorios Epirus, Greece, and came to Uxbridge, MA as a teenager. Arthur married Aristula "Toula" Pappas, and they began their life in Worcester where they raised five daughters. His beloved Toula died in April 2007; they had been married for 60 years. In 1952, Arthur purchased Montrose Dairy on West Boylston Street, which expanded into the successful Montrose Restaurant. For the next 25 years, he worked seven days a week, enjoying every minute of the restaurant business. He especially loved his many customers and dedicated staff. He was an active member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and served on its Board of Directors. Arthur and his wife helped organize the first of many Greek festivals at St. Spyridon's. He was a member of the Order of AHEPA and the Epirotic Society. Arthur most enjoyed being with his family who are eternally grateful for his love, selfless generosity, and humor. With his wife, he loved to cook and entertain. He was a storyteller who shared his war stories and those of his youth with family and friends. He was proud of his heritage, and enjoyed Greek music, dancing, and quoting the ancient Greek philosophers.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law,Dorothea and Steven Craig, of Hanover and Truro MA, Elaine K. Shocas, of Washington, DC, Katherine Shocas and Daniel de la Torre, of Worcester, MA, Sandra and James Bazoukas, of Worcester, MA, Maria and Thomas Arms, of Ridgefield, CT. I went to Providence St. Junior High with Kathy. I have fond memories of eating at Montrose's with my family. My prayers go out to the entire Shocas family on your loss.

I went to school with Kathy Shocas (Providence St. Jr. High) where we all knew her family was in the restaurant biz.

I met Mr. Shocas a few times at the restaurant in W. Boylston, a very lovely man.

After buying the El Morocco I hired a lady who worked for Mr. Shocas and spoke very fondly of her years there.

I'm very saddened to hear about the loss of your Dad. When I think of Arthur, I think of a proud, distinguished gentleman with lots of class; whose whole life revoloved around his family. I'm sure he will be dearly missed even though he is in a better place with his wife, your Mom.

I was so saddened to hear about your DAD but then on the other hand I figured it was probably a blessing. You don't need me to tell you what a great guy he was. I always enjoyed his and your Mother's company. Great parents---great kids. May your many fond memories of him sustain you in your time of sorrow.Sorry I won't be able to be there but you will certainly be in my thoughts. Love you all, Virginia

The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear, especially after losing your very much loved Mother recently. Your Dad was a wonderful man who I recently enjoyed visiting with. He told me he missed Toula very much and new he is with her in a better place and they will be happy to be together once again.
You were the best daughters, so loving and caring. Not everyone is blessed with such a wonderful family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of sorrow. Be strong and keep your family together as your parents would of wanted you to do.
With much love to you all,
Irene and Chris Kyriazis
