Constantin Gherondache Obituary

Dr. Constantin Gherondache, research scientist and clinical physician who did pioneering research in Rumania and later at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, died on June 14 in Boston. He was 93 and had lived previously in Worcester.

Dr. Gherondache was born in Ioannina, Greece, son of Nicolas and Victoria (Hadgi). Early in his childhood the family moved to Bucharest. After graduation from the Medical School there he completed postgraduate studies at Dresden. During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the Rumanian Army Medical Corps.

Dr. Gherondache played major roles in the founding of the Bucharest Institute of Antibiotics and in Rumania's first attempts to manufacture antibiotics. Recognized by the Rumanian government for his cutting edge research, Dr. Gherondache served as Special Consultant to the Departments of Health and of Chemical Industry and helped organize postgraduate programs in medicine and pharmacy.

Increasingly ill at ease with the Rumanian regime, he left Bucharest in 1958. With his wife and daughter he settled in Worcester and joined Drs. Pincus and Tait in their research on cholesterol and on metabolism of steroid hormones in the elderly, which resulted in an extensive list of publications.

Dr. Gerondache also pursued a career as a clinical physician, serving as Cushing Hospital's Chief of Medical Services from 1961-68 and as Worcester State Hospital's Medical Director from 1968-87. A specialist in geriatric medicine, he was Medical Director of Mill Hill Nursing Home, Hermitage Nursing Home and the Jewish Home for the Aged. He retired from medical practice in 1987.

He leaves a daughter, Nicoleta, wife of Dr. George Theodosiou of Cambridge, MA, two granddaughters, Dr. Nicole Theodosiou Napier of Latham, NY and Noel Alexia Theodosiou of London, England, and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Paniotis Gherondachis of Athens. Dr. Gherondache's wife, Alexandra, born Papioannou, predeceased him in 1987.

Funeral service will be held on June 20th, at 11 a.m. at the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester.

Donations may be sent to the Rosalie Wolf Interdisciplinary Geriatric Health Care Research Center, in care of University of Massachusetts Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 2795, Worcester 01605.

Dear Nicoletta, Dear George,
Dear Noel & Nicole,

One would think that it is hard to write about someone whom we have not met. Yet, it does not feel this way. It is of course with sadness that one has to reflect only now on this, but Noel's grandfather was a fixture from almost day 1 in our conversations, in Noel's tales. He radiated through all the stories and certainly through her comportment. He must have had an amazing effect on the people around him, and certainly on his family.

People like he, may pass on, but never leave us: they remain with us in us as a compass for our conscience and give us a mission to share with others what we have learned from, experienced with them.

Our thoughts are with you all. He certainly is now in a better place, from where he can follow, what you all are doing.

Dear George and Leta
Uncle Costantinos as a rare person who always has been an example of excelent personality, family leader and scientist. I shall remember him as beloved uncle and wish in Greek "to xoma pou ton skepazei na einai elafry".

Dear Niki and George,
I first met father when he moved into his apartment next to yours in our Cambridge building. With us you called him father and that is how I will remember him. He was always handsome and charming even as he aged alongside all of us. As the time went by I marveled at what a supportive family you all were to each other. He was a wonderful father and you were loving children. That is how I will always carry my memories of him - as a wonderful father in a loving family. Love Pauline

From Ireland, deep condolences on the sad death of Papou, the wonderful, gifted person Noel and I have spoken of many, many times over the years.

In the translated words of our Gaelic blessing, Papou, I address this to you:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand

with much love to Noel, Nicole and Mr & Mrs Theodosiou at this sad time

I remember "Papou" from my childhood. He was a kind man with a twinkle in his eyes. He would promenade regally up and down Wheeler Ave. I always thought of him as a true gentleman
