David Lloyd Obituary

A resident of Worcester and Holden for 46 years, David Lloyd was a WPI institution until his retirement in 1986. Born in Pittsburgh, Lloyd attended Cornell University until enlisting in the army where he served in the infantry of the 100th Division during the liberation of France. While on leave, he met his wife of 64 years, Elsie Joan Sivell at a tea dance in London. Following the war he returned to Cornell, graduating in 1947 and did graduate work at Clark University. Lloyd began his career of 32 years at WPI in 1954 as business manager and was instrumental in establishing the university's Alden Labs as well as other building projects during the 1960s and 70s. For many years he maintained active membership in the Kiwanis, with the Worcester Community Concert Association as Director, as a board member of the Greendale YMCA and as Vestryman of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Worcester.  In 1966 Mr. Lloyd was made Vice President for Business Affairs at WPI and named Treasurer three years later. During his time as Vice President he was an active committee member and presenter with the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers (EACUBO) and Management Committee member of the Massachusetts Association of Non-Profit Schools and Colleges. He was a member of The Bohemians, served on the board of the former Consumers Bank and, following his retirement in 1986, served as Chair of the Finance Committee of the Girl Scouts.  Mr. Lloyd enjoyed gardening, music, politics and reading, especially World War II history.

In addition to his wife Elsie, he is survived by his daughter, Gillian; his son-in-law, Barry and his two grandchildren, Matthew and Emily of West Roxbury, MA. His son, David W. Lloyd died in 2007. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alzheimer's Association.

A memorial service in The Higgins House, John Wing Rd. on the WPI campus is planned for Sunday May 2, 2010 at 2 pm.

Dear Elsie and Family.
It was such a joy to be a part of David's care. He was a wonderful man and always had a smile .I will always have nice memories of you both. You made it easy to come to work each night. We will hold you close in our hearts.

Dear Elsie, Gillian, Barry and family: We have spent so many years together at WPI, neighbors and friends.
We know Dave's death puts a very deep hole in your family. May sympathy of others and fond memories and family love and faith in Christ make all of this chapter in your lives a bit easier to endure. We want you to know that all of us share in your loss and pray for your comfort and peace. Donald and Marcia Zwiep
