When I was 15, I saw an ad in the local paper, babysitter needed for seven children. I answered the ad that very day and met the most wonderful, strong and joyful woman I have ever known. Years later she told me that when she met me she knew that things would be ok, and that her children would be well cared for. Doris and Joe were always kind to me, and considered me their friend. I moved to CT after high school, and the Nolet family returned to MA. I visited them when my own children were babies; they were living on Pine street at the time. We were never out of touch. I moved around like a gypsy for many years, always letting her know where I was and how I was, which wasn't always great. She advised me to give up the struggle and just be, to have faith in myself and not to be sad. We sent each other gifts, cards and letters often. I told her not to spend money on me since there were so many others, suggesting she send me things she didn't want anymore. She sent two of her well-worn Gene Stratton-Porter books, which I still treasure, and Little Women which I passed back to Debbie. I started sending her favorite bread (Manghi's maple walnut) every few months, and she eventually wrote: Rosalie, I don't need any more bread! (One of the many things she said and did that make laugh still.) My most cherished gift from Mom Doris was a little framed vintage poem: "No one is poor who has a friend ~ a loyal friend and true. I feel just like a millionaire 'cause I've a friend like you." My darling friend, that is exactly the way I always felt about you. Your children are a reflection of your goodness and love, and I will stay in their lives and try to be a good big sis to all of them. Rest in peach, my beautiful friend and mentor.
