Eli Shaw Obituary
Worcester - Eli Shaw, 94, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Worcester, Massachusetts, passed away on June 15 in UMASS Memorial Hospital, Worcester. He leaves his wife of 41 years, Mary Shaw of Middletown, RI; his daughter, Sharon Yaffe and her husband Alan of Worcester, and his son, Joel Shaw and his wife Malkie, also of Worcester; eight grandchildren: Hillary and Matt Harris of New York; Rachel Yaffe, of Everett, Massachusetts; Dara Yaffe of Worcester; Sarala and Zelik Langsam of Brooklyn, NY; Frumie Shaw of Worcester; Rochie Shaw of Worcester; Dinie Shaw of Worcester; Levi Shaw of Worcester; and three great-grandchildren: Estee, Chana, and Chezzy Langsam of Brooklyn, NY.
He was predeceased by his four siblings, and his first wife Shirley Shaw. He was born in Przytyk, Poland, and was the son of Alexander Zisel and Soroh Leah Warshawsky. He was a survivor of five concentration camps during the Holocaust. He was liberated in January, 1945 and traveled to Italy with a friend to make a new life. He came to America in July, 1950, where he settled in Providence, Rhode Island and worked as a tailor.
Throughout his life, he remained fiercely independent. After he retired, he enjoyed taking the bus to visit his friends at his former tailor shops in downtown Providence.
Private funeral services were held graveside on June 16 at Lincoln Park Cemetery in Warwick, Rhode Island. An open shiva will begin at 8 pm Sunday and continue through Friday 5 pm at the home of Joel and Malkie Shaw, 61 Valley Hill Drive Worcester. Prayer service will be at 7 am and 8 pm daily at the home of Joel and Malkie Shaw. Visitors wishing to make condolences to Sharon Yaffe may do so between the hours of 6 pm and 8pm daily.
