Frances McCarthy Obituary

Sister Frances J. "Ruth" McCarthy, 92, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center.

Sister Frances was born in Cambridge, daughter of Eugene E. and Josephine (Fisher) McCarthy and entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1937. She was also known in religious life as Sister Philomene Marie.

During sister's long career in education, she was a teacher in several Notre Dame Schools in the Boston area including Holy Rosary in Lawrence, Holy Redeemer in East Boston, St. Joseph and St. James in Salem, and St. Patrick's in Roxbury. After her retirement from teaching, she volunteered at Blessed Sacrament in Jamaica Plain, Braintree Hospital and the Mother St. Joseph House.

She leaves her sisters, Rosalie Collins of Reading and Jeanne Reilly of Roslindale; many nieces and nephews including David Collins, Kevin Reilly, Mary Ann Chiavilli, Gina Duvault, and Kenneth, Anthony, Larry and Robert Adum; a great-nephew and five great-nieces and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame. She was predeceased by her sisters, Clare Lebte and Olive Adum, and her nephew Ronald Adum.

Calling hours at the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, are Tuesday, June 28, beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will follow at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund, 351 Broadway, Everett, MA 02149.

The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.
