Frederick Salminen Obituary

Frederick (Rick) Salminen died Sunday, April 10, 2011 from injuries sustained during an accident while cutting trees on his property.

He leaves his mother, Frances Salminen, of Oakham and three siblings: Lynda Simeone of Barre, Ed Salminen and his wife Robin of Parkdale, OR and Ann Salminen and her husband John Busch of South Korea, and 2 nieces and a nephew; and many other friends and family who loved him and were loved dearly by him.

Rick was born in Holden, MA and lived in Oakham most of his life. He graduated from Quabbin Regional HS and attended WPI in Worcester.

Throughout the '70s and '80s Rick worked and lived in many parts of the country. He planted trees in Oregon, surveyed uranium mine claims in Wyoming, and once lived on a sunken boat in Florida. He rebuilt the cable cars in San Francisco, and built the transit lines in Portland Oregon. But in the end, he knew that Oakham was where he most wanted to be.

Rick enjoyed fishing, skiing, kayaking, traveling, outdoor activities and spending time with family and friends. He liked, and took time to listen to, the sound of the brook at night. He knew the best back roads to take to show you something beautiful that you just didn't know was there. He knew where the trout were, and would show you how to catch them.

He was predeceased by his father, William, and his brother-in-law, Mike Simeone.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, April 18th from 5 to 7 PM in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St., North Brookfield. The funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 296 Main St., North Brookfield. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Oakham. Donations may be made to the Oakham Historical Assoc., PO Box 236, Oakham, MA 01068; Camp Putnam, 141 Rutherford Road, New Braintree, MA 01531; or Oakham Parks and Recreation, 2 Coldbrook Rd. #1, Oakham, MA 01068.

There are many times since 2011 that I´ve thought of Rick. I hadn´t seen him since his days at the company we both worked for. Out of the blue he showed up at my home, he told me he thought I was a good guy so he wanted to say hello. I´ve never forgotten about that. I wish I had hung with him more.
RIP Rick.

My Deepest Sympathies go out to the Salminen family. I am so very sorry.
I had gone to school with Rick at Quabbin. Though we really did not know each other back in school; recently on FB we became friends and started chatting. Was looking forward to meeting him at our class reunion in June.
I surely do miss his humourous comments he use to make at some of the postings and his other web site info he shared.
I am blessed to have known Rick, if even for a brief time. He will be dearly missed.
RIP my friend.

4/20/11 I just found out about Rick's passing from Bruce Sanderson, I am truly sadden by this. I had not seen Rick in almost 30 years from his days at Norton Company when he stopped in to buy bait at the shop. It was great to see him as all these years. I am truly overwhelmed. Rest is peace Rick…

We recently met after many years, his warm smile bridged that more than decade gap. We spoke of our experiences past and recent and his place in Maine... We will miss that warm smile and optimistic attitude.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was an unique individual. When you had good times with Rick, they were good times. He showed me many beautiful places in this country, that I will never forget and experience again. He is now at peace with family and friends.

To the Family of Rick:
Please find comfort in knowing that Rick was loved by so many. Though I had not seen him in a while, I often heard of what he was up to through several other people. He was very close to most of my family members. He will surely be missed. Such a tragedy. He is in God's hand now. Keep his memories close at heart.

I only knew Rick for three short months but we really clicked and I believe he was extremely happy, as was I. He was at my house on Saturday the 9th and was in such a great mood. We made plans for Sunday, but God had His own plans. I want to extend my deepest sympathies to his beloved family and friends; I heard so many stories! In the last month he got to feel Spring, got to visit the ocean, got to ride a motorcycle, saw old friends and we had so many plans for the future. I will miss him forever and feel truly blessed to have known him, if only for a minute. God Bless you all at this difficult time.
