George Economou, 82

Worcester - George Economou, 82, died Friday, December 11th in St. Vincent Hospital. He married his wonderful wife, Elpida in 1961 and they spent 49 memorable years together until her passing in 2010. He leaves his children Konstantinos and his wife, Gail and Joanna and her husband, Chrsitos; his siblings, James Economou and his wife, Alexandra, Florence Barris and her husband, Emmanueal and Goldie Goros and her husband, George; his six joyous grandchildren, Julia, Kristina, Kendall, Eleni, Stergios and Angela; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Economou in 2019.

He was born in Worcester the son of Konstantinos and Eleni (Kentros) Economou who immigrated to the United States from Douviani in the region of Northern Epiros. George worked as an independent contractor for 26 years and also as a carpentry instructor for several years. In 2000, George retired from Bay Path Vocational Technical High School where he taught carpentry. He was an active member of the Army National Guard of the 181st Infantry 26 Yankee Division serving as a staff sergeant for 21 years.

George also devoted much of his time to serving his church, St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral. There he served on the Parish Council and House Committee for several years. He also was a member of the Order of AHEPA for 55 years. George loved his family, friends and his church above all.

His funeral is Tuesday, December 15th with a service at 11:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. A visitation will be on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service in the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
