Gerald Carroll Obituary

Dr. Gerald J. Carroll, 79, of Shrewsbury, a longtime surgeon at Saint Vincent Hospital, died Tuesday, May 12th at Saint Vincent.

His beloved wife, June J. (Miller) Carroll died in 1996.

He leaves his four sons, Gerald J. Carroll, Jr. of Shrewsbury, Francis X. Carroll and his wife Anita of Oslo, Norway, Daniel H. Carroll of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Patrick J. Carroll and his wife Virginia of Springfield, VA; his brother, Kevin Carroll of Chester, CT, his two sisters, Patricia Taylor of Westport, CT and Esme Carroll of Coral Springs, FL; six grandchildren, Johanna Carroll, Erin Carroll, Sandra June Carroll, Lynette Carroll, Aileen Carroll and Kirstin Ohlsen; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Maureen Boylan of Westport, CT.

He was born in the Bronx, NYC, son of the late Dr Gerald J. and Florence A. (Donnelly) Carroll. He graduated from Fordham Prep, Class of 1948, Fordham University, Class of 1952 and University College County Cork School of Medicine, Cork, Ireland, Class of 1956. He lived in the Boston area for several years before moving to Shrewsbury more than 30 years ago.

Dr. Carroll was a member of the medical staff of Saint Vincent Hospital from 1958-2001, where he specialized in thoracic surgery. He was also affiliated with the UMass Medical School, Worcester.

He was a member of Saint Mary's parish in Shrewsbury, and the Model T Club of Central New England.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, May 17th from 2-5 PM in Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be held on Monday, May 18th from the funeral home with a Mass celebrated at 10 AM in Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5005 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244 Attention: Development Department.

My Thoughts and prayers are with the entire Carroll Family. I worked for Dr. Carroll in his office at St. Vincent Hospital from 1993 to 1998 and he was always so kind and compassionate to anyone he came in contact with. He was a wonderful man and a Great Surgeon. He will be missed by many. God Bless.

Gerry was a very special human being. Not only was he a wonderful neighbour and a friend but an accomplished compassionate surrgeon and a collegue. We will always cherish the 30+ years of quality professional and personal relationship with Gerry and his lovely family. Gerry was truely God's gift to mankind. He will be missed by many.
