Glen Hersey Obituary

died at 66 surrounded by his loving family, after struggling for several weeks with complications from minor heart surgery.

Glen grew up in Norton, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts where he received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees. Glen married Marsha Bentley, his wife of 44 years, whom he met while attending the University. Glen taught English at Athol High School for 3 years and then for 33 years at Wachusett Regional High School. He was a passionate and dedicated teacher beloved by his students and respected by his colleagues.

Every summer for 23 years, Glen and his family travelled to Saco, Maine where he managed and maintained the camping facilities at Ferry Beach, a Unitarian-Universalist conference center. Through his loving dedication and easy friendship, he established himself as a touchstone presence for families attending this community from across the country and internationally. The camping grounds were later dedicated as the Hersey Grove in recognition of his loving service.

While living in Barre, MA, Glen served on the School Committee and then the Finance Committee for several years. In 1990 he and Marsha moved to Hubbardston, MA.

Glen was an active member of the First Unitarian Church of Worcester where he became very involved in the choir, singing and supporting the choir in many ways including maintaining the piano, choir equipment and serving on the pledge committee. He gave lay sermons and often led candle lightings with inspirational messages. Glen was an active member of the Shakespeare club of Worcester, MA and served as club president and secretary.

After Glen retired from teaching, he volunteered as an English tutor at MWCC and offered violin lessons to older students who wanted to return to music. He has traveled extensively all over America by RV with his wife and family. Recently Glen and Marsha began spending winters in Florida camping, biking, playing his violin, kayaking and enjoying an active community of retirees from all over the country.

Throughout his life, Glen loved music and literature of all kinds. He was passionate about community; everywhere he went he would touch the lives of those around him and share his loving spirit with his students, colleagues, conference-goers, fellow retirees or strangers met along the way. Glen is survived by his wife and two sons, his twin granddaughters and his sister Donna from Reston VA.

The memorial service is Saturday June 21st at 1 o'clock at the First Unitarian Church of Worcester, MA. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be given to the Ferry Beach Park Association at 5 Morris Ave, Saco ME 04072. On line guest book at

I was so saddened to hear of Mr Hersey's passing. He was a remarkable person. He taught me volumes, about life and about literature. I will never forget the wonderful days in his classroom. I live diliberately, because he knew about a man who knew beans, and shared that knowledge. The world is and will be a better place, for him having been here. Peace and God Bless.

As we sang for Glen yesterday and shared our thoughts about this very kind, gentle man, I have been reflecting about two words that he spoke to me upon playing of the left handed viollin for the first time since its reconstruction. He said to me, "You know Chris, this violin has such a sweet sound."

This was Glen through and through.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound".

I profoundly miss him more than I ever expected. Take time to smell the roses. Listen to the sweet sounds of life.

My deepest sympathies to Glen's family, although I only knew him for a few years he was a great man, he was the first to extend a welcoming hand when I moved into silverleaf and surely the glue that held this place together, he will be missed dearly. Rest in peace my friend.

Marsha: My attendance at the UU church has been sporadic during the last few years, but a few weeks ago I attended the last service of the season before the choir would retire for the summer. I spoke with Glen afterwards during coffee hour and will be forever grateful that I was privileged to speak with him for even a few minutes just one more time. For many years, every Sunday, I would turn and look up at the choir and my eyes would meet Glen's. His face was always full of expression, his eyes often moist with tears. He was one of the most wise, warm and kind men I have ever met. We shared a love of hymns, particularly Abide With Me. May we all take comfort in the lyrics - "Where is death's sting, where grave thy victory, I triumph still if Thou abides with me."

Very sorry to hear of Mr. Hersey's passing. As a student I knew he was a great teacher, at that young age that is all you think they are, which after reading this wonderful writeup, it's certainly what he was to his core. What a wonderful example of a life well spent. Rest in Peace

Marsha, No words at this time will help in the loss of Glenn. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family. We will miss his wonderful love of music and his closing song of Amazing Grace at Friday night live in Florida.
