Hans Michael Thoma
HARDWICK - Hans Michael Thoma, 83, of Hardwick, beloved husband of Ginna (Freeman) Thoma, loving father to Gretchjen(Thoma) Smith, Elizabeth (Thoma) Dirom and Mark F. Thoma; grandfather to four beautiful granddaughters, Taylor, Logan, Sophie and Grace; brother of Martin, Christopher and the late Peter Thoma passed away in his home on August 26, 2013. Hans was born on April 13, 1930 to M. Fred and Magda (Gminder) Thoma in Fitchburg, MA; attended Fitchburg schools graduating in the class of 1948. He attended the University of Maine, Orono, where he was an accomplished member of the ski team and also a member of Phi Gamma Delta. Hans served in the armed services in both 1952 and 1953 prior to settling in Ware where he was employed by Ware Knitters before starting his own business Profiles, Inc in 1965. He was truly dedicated to his work and family, passionate about both. He retired in 1995 with selling the business to afford time for is true love, walking with nature, whether it be in the Quabbin, the White Mountains, or the Alps. Hans taught his family to enjoy the same on many vacations or just quiet moments were spent together on rivers, mountains or the sea, no matter what the season. His spirit and pride would be best honored by either a donation to your favorite charity, or the planting of a tree, bush or other beautiful plant in his name. A Celebration of his life will be held at 12:00pm September 8, 2013 at the First Universalist Church in Hardwick Center followed with a gathering of his family and friends at his gentleman's farm, 1186 Hardwick Road, Hardwick, MA. I recall thinking that Hans was a kind and gentle soul when he was living with my grandmother, Carrie Lincoln, on Church Street. Thus began a fifty year relationship with the Lincoln family. We shall miss him, and offer our condolences to his family.

Although I only met your husband, Father, and grandfather a couple of times, it was easy to see the important place he held in your family. Please accept my deepest sympathy, but at the same time remember and be proud of a wonderful life well lived.

To Mrs. Thoma, Gretchjen, Beth and Mark, I am so sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of Hans from the coffee shop days before school and Hans was always such a gentleman at every encounter I had with him. May happy memories comfort you at this difficult time.
