John Case Obituary
SOUTH YARMOUTH- - John A. Case, 83, formerly of Worcester, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2014, in South Dennis MA, after a long illness. Born on June 29, 1931, in Millburn, New Jersey, he was predeceased by his parents, Russell Emmons Case and Marion (McGowan) Case, and his older brother, Russell "Dick" Case.
Raised in Worcester, John-better known as "Ace" to his friends and family-attended North High School and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1953 with a degree in History. He entered the U.S. Army after graduation and served honorably as a military policeman for two years stationed in Germany. After being discharged, John earned a Masters Degree in Education from Boston College in 1960, and then began a decades-long career as an educator in the Worcester area. He first worked as a Social Studies teacher at West Boylston Jr.-Sr. High School from 1960-64, and then moved on to St. John's High School, where he taught U.S. History and American Government for over thirty years, finally retiring to South Yarmouth, Cape Cod in 1996. Notably, John served as head baseball coach at St. John's for 22 years, leading the Pioneers to the Massachusetts State Championship in 1976. He was elected to the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1989, and the St. John's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. This past May, the school honored him at the rededication of Pioneer Field.
John was a proud member of the Sons of Erin of Cape Cod, and of AMVETS-Cape Cod. A lifetime golfer, he managed holes-in-one four times over his career: at Juniper Hills Golf Club, Cummaquid Country Club, Oxford Gold Club, and Bayberry Hills Golf Course. Although he never married and had no children, his niece and nephews adored him. "He was a helluva guy," said one of the nephews, Michael Case of Princeton, New Jersey. "When we were kids, he was larger than life."
He is survived by his sister, Patricia (Case) Moynihan, of Denver CO; niece, Deirdre Moynihan (Denver, CO); and nephews, Michael Case (Princeton, NJ), Stephen Case (Mt. Holly, NJ), Michael J. Moynihan, Jr. MD (Denver, CO), Denis Moynihan (Denver, CO), Sean Moynihan (Louisville, CO), and Timothy Moynihan (Minneapolis, MN) as well as a large number of grand-nieces and grand nephews.
A Funeral will be held Saturday, July 12 from CALLAHAN~FAY AND CASWELL FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. with a Mass at 10 AM in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting Hours are Friday, July 11 from 5 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Case was a truly special coach, teacher, and person. Mr. Case displayed tremendous loyalty to his players and treated us like sons. His fantastic passion for the game permeated throughout the whole team and was a big reason why his teams were always competitive; it was an honor to have played for Mr. Case for three years and to have been a co-captain for him. It was also a privilege to have been a student in his Government class. Thank you Mr. Case for all you did for me especially with the college application process.

Coach, your legacy and memory will live forever. You conducted yourself with the utmost concern/love for your players at all times. Winning was always secondary to personal conduct. We learned far more than baseball (or History) from you. We'll miss you.

John Case was a master coach and teacher. He was also one of the nicest and most thoughtful individuals I have ever known. And no one ever loved a sport more than John loved baseball.

Mr. Case was a wonderful History teacher. He taught my class in the late 1980s at Saint John's. He "coached" me through AP History - I not only succeeded on the exam, I have fond memories of his teaching style, and tried to incorporate his encouraging behavior in my own. To his family, I'm sorry for his loss, but happy for his life!

Ace, I first remember you pitching at Lake Park to us kids - John Tivnan on one side and you on the other. The joy of the sandlot, the warm summer sun, you and John throwing quips with each pitch, we kids learning from two athlete gentleman. Years later coaching against you, the ultimate honor - again you were always gracious and funny and positive and simply delightful. The thousands of young lives you touched and inspired has to put you on the first team up there among the stars. I know I am honored to have known you. God Bless.

John Case was thirty years older than me but I knew him as a contemporary.
He was the epitome of a gentleman and is fondly remembered as such here on Cape Cod by his many friends.
We knew him from The Olde Inne and the Sons of Erin and his involvement in all the charity events and fundraisers he supported over the years.
He was moderate in his habits but I nevertheless shared many a beer and a good conversation with him, as did a number of my friends.
He loved to talk baseball with us and I think he was amused and pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm for the game among some of us Irish emigrants.
He lived quietly and with great dignity, and as I have said before today, I never heard him utter an unkind word, nor indeed a crude one.
On more than one occasion, I have seen him encounter a former pupil or player by chance, always to be greeted warmly and with great affection .
I passed on the sad news of John's passing to a few friends on Cape Cod today, and that same affection and respect was evident
everywhere.
A few of us sang many a patriotic song with John over the years, and it seems somehow fitting that he should have passed away on July Fourth.
To me he represented what is great about America and was the kind of American that I admire.
He loved his baseball and his golf and his country and I like to think he loved my old country too.
And we on Cape Cod simply loved him.
God bless you and keep you, John. We'll miss you .

John was an absolute gentleman. He would always sing patriotic songs at our events. Never heard a bad word from him nor one spoken against him. He will be missed by the Cape cod Veterans and all. We will remember John at our next event. Our prayers are with him and his family.

Enlightened teacher, top-notch coach and treasured colleague, John Case was one of a mere handful of people whom you meet in your life who are truly unforgettable. He was indeed "one of a kind."
There will be a thousand John Case stories told in the coming days and weeks, and every one of them will leave a smile on the listeners' faces.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
I rememeber Mr. Case from my history classes at West Boylston High from 1960- 1964 - the stories he would tell about his time in the Army and baseball that made his history classes interesting. Everyone knew him as "Ace" Case but we never called him that in class.
