John Dowd is still my absolute favorite teacher. He taught me to read at least the first two pages of the newspaper every day; that it was the duty of a citizen to be informed. That is so important especially now, where there is so much misinformation spread about. I read and listen to the news constantly because of this man. I still think of him often, even though my North High graduation was 54 years ago.

Mr. Dowd was my absolute favorite teacher from any year in school, including college. He taught World Affairs to me in 1966 and forced us all to read the first two pages of the newspaper every day - a habit I learned to love and follow to this day (with more pages than the first two!). If every teacher in the country could be half as good as this man, education in this country would be in fantastic shape. Every thing I know about history started with the seeds planted by this amazing teacher, whom I have thought about numerous times in the 48 years since I sat in his classroom. What he taught was the desire to learn - not an easy thing to transmit - but he was very successful doing it.
