Joseph Moran Obituary
Worcester - Joseph M. Moran, 87, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, December 19th after a brief illness.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Barbara Seale-Moran, his seven children, Ann Swenson and her husband Phillip, Joseph Moran, Jr., all of Worcester, Teresa Moran of West Boylston, Michael Moran and his partner Keely Doyle of Dudley, Mary Williams and her husband Edward of Worcester, Patrick Moran and his wife Kristy of Cherry Valley and Maureen Remington and her partner Carlo Genatossio of Oxford. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Danielle, Kevin, Kaitlyn, Meghan, Lauren, Brendan, Evan, Nolan and Maeve Marie, as well as a great grandson, Jace,
He also leaves his sister, Sister Teresa Moran, SSJ, and his brother, James Moran. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Joseph Moran in 1960, as well as his two sisters, Sister Anna Patrice, SSJ, Sister Joseph Anne, SSJ and his two brothers, John and Francis Moran.
Joseph was born in Worcester, son of the late Michael and Sarah (McMahon) Moran.
He graduated from St. Stephen's High School, received his B.A. in History and English from the College of the Holy Cross and his M.Ed. from Worcester State University.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1955, working in Army Security and earning the rank of Sergeant.
Joseph worked for the Oxford Public Schools for over fifty years as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal. The consummate educator, Joseph ended his career in 2014 working for the Worcester Public Schools as a substitute teacher and tutor at Burncoat Elementary and Gates Lane Schools.
As his family could attest, "Big Joe's" wicked Irish sense of humor made a lasting impression on all who knew him.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Beacon Hospice, most notably Joseph's daughter-in-law, Kristy, whose compassionate care for our father will never be forgotten.
The funeral will be held on Friday, December 23rd from the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester, with a Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
Visiting hours are Thursday, December 22nd from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's memory to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.

"Mr" Moran was my teacher at Oxford High School. He enjoyed teasing me about my lack of height which was not an issue for him... But I always felt he was helping behind the scenes. He was very supportive and his classes were his own unique methodology. I admired him very much and have often thought back to him during those high school years. He was a great guy. I apologize for being so late to offer my sympathies but I just learned of his passing. My sympathies for your loss to all who loved him

Dear Barbara, I will never forget my first memory of Joe. I was 23, it was my first day teaching at the high school and I must admit that cafeteria duty was a little overwhelming. I stood with my back to the windows, surveying the chaos all around me. Then a giant of a man walked up and introduced himself to me. He said "Stick with me kid and everything will be okay." This wonderful man helped me in so many ways. He tried to keep my in school when I was pregnant at 17 in my senior year. Although circumstances didn't permit it, I remembered everything he told me, and went on to get my Ged, went to college and had a wonderful job to take care of my 4 children. Mr. Moran was indeed a very special individual, with his sense of humor, his model for giving kids many chances after mistakes, he understood that kids mess up a lot before getting it right. He was so patient yet commanded respect but also offered it. I won't forget this man any time soon. RIP Mr. Moran, you did much just right.

What an amazing influence on so many. I was lucky enough to have Mr Moran as a teacher and vice principal his last few years in Oxford. My parents and older brothers are able to trade similar stories of being a student in Mr Moran's classroom. The common theme in all our memories is how he believed in all of us and found a way to get through to each individual. Thank you Mr. Moran for showing so many young minds how important we could be to the World.

Mr. Moran made me felt wanted and loved after being in the foster care system for so long. He took me under his wing and always had me laughing when he told me "Just make sure you're not like your brother." I enjoyed his Latin class in 7th grade and was sad to see it go. He had so much power and authority just by walking the halls but also such compassion. He will greatly be missed by all. My condolences.

Mr. Moran was the consummate gentleman. At 4'10, he towered over me. On the rare occasion that I was called to the Principal's Office, he would sit while scolding me so he could look me in the eye vs. intimidating me by looking down on me!!! A giant of a man in so many ways. You believed in me when so many others, including myself, did not. You did not withhold correction or discipline when called for, but you heaped praise and encouragement much more often. Your intimidating stature belied your kindness and soft spot for the underdogs like me. I will never forget you or your many kindnesses and compassion.
