Julie Maher Obituary
FRAMINGHAM/WORCESTER - Dr. Julie (Guilbert) Maher, M.D., 33, of Framingham, formerly of Worcester, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012, in her home, surrounded by loving family.
Julie is survived by her loving husband of six years, Scott V. Maher and their two year old daughter, Megan J. Maher. She is also survived by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Daniel B. and Janet F. (Johnson) Guilbert of Worcester; a brother, Matthew J. Guilbert and his wife Dana of San Diego; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Lucy Johnson of Haverhill; her paternal grandparents, Ronald and Jacqueline Guilbert of Haverhill; her father in law, Vincent Maher and his wife Ellen of Worcester; a brother in law, Timothy Maher and his wife April of Southbridge; many aunts, uncles, cousins as well as nieces and nephews.
Julie was born in Worcester, where she graduated as class Valedictorian from Saint Peter-Marian High School. She later graduated Magna Cum Laude from Trinity College in Hartford and earned her Medical Degree from University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. She and Scott then moved to Providence where she was a Resident in the Brown University Program at Rhode Island Hospital, where she earned the distinction of Chief Resident. Julie completed her infectious disease fellowship at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and during that time, also earned a Masters Degree in Public Health. She was recognized as an outstanding Fellow at Tufts Medical Center, and in her honor the University is naming an academic award, "The Dr. Julie Maher Award for Clinical Excellence".
Relatives and friends are invited to join her family for calling hours on Sunday, August 12, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. A Memorial Service for Dr. Maher will be held on Monday, August 13, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Megan Maher Trust, in care of Digital Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 9130, Marlborough MA, 01752-9130.

I am so sorry for your loss. Julie and I attended SPM together, and while we all recognized her quiet brilliance, I mostly remember her genuine kindness. I only knew Julie in the briefest way, as a third year medical student at Brown during my internal medicine clerkship. She was finishing her chief residency at the time and I recall attending a few morning reports that she led. Even from those few brief encounters now more than four years ago, I still remember her as an outstanding physician and teacher, and as a very warm and kind person who never made us medical students feel unwelcome or looked down upon. I hadn't heard anything of her or known of her illness until I learned of her passing through a colleague just today, but I felt compelled to honor her memory in some small way by posting here. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and send my deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

Everyone can remember teachers that have made a difference in their lives. In this case Julie was a student who made a difference in her teacher's life. Julie worked with me one afternoon a week in my infectious diseases clinic during her residency and chief years in Providence. The days when Julie could be there were always good days and we both learned from each other. I have not heard from her in a couple of years and was not aware of her struggle. I am deeply sorry for your loss of such an exceptional mother wife, daughter, friend.

I didn't know Julie personally, as she was in a grade above me, but we both went to St. Peter-Marian High School. I read about how hard she worked to become a doctor and about her husband and daughter. It makes me cry to think how she died so young. Sometimes it's hard to understand why things like this happen - why people are taken from us so early. I had a niece who died only hours after she was born. A few months before, my grandmother had passed away. My sister had an experience where my grandmother came to her and told her that everything was okay and that her daughter was here with her (meaning here, in heaven). I believe that's where Julie is now. It's hard not to have someone with you in the here and now, but treasure your memories and look forward to the day you are reunited in heaven. May all who have been touched by Julie's love find peace.

I did not know Julie or anyone in the family but after reading her obituary I feel compelled to say how impressed I am with what an outstanding woman she became and how hard she worked to get there. Julie was a wonderful caring young woman. I feel very fortunate that I got to know Julie in a Bible Study we took together. Her life was way to brief.She had so much to give to her family, friends and her patients.
