Leo Charles Brooks
Rutland/Dothan, AL - Leo Charles Brooks, formerly of Rutland and Port St. Lucie, FL died on March 15, 2012 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, AL. He was born in Manchester, NH, the son of Leo I. and Ruth M. (Fischer) Brooks, and lived in Rutland for many years. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving with Battery A 483rd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; sister, Marilyn McGann of Bossier City, LA; mother-in-law, Nadean Johnson of Dothan, AL; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jimmie and Barbara Johnson of TX; nephew, Lt. Col. James McGann [Joyce] of LA; niece, Missy [Rob] Behrendt of LA; niece, Michelle [Joe] Johnson of Dothan; nephew, Jimmie D. Johnson, Jr. [Kathleen] of Wayne, PA; 10 great nieces and nephews and two great-great nieces. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, John McGann, father-in-law, Jimmie Johnson and his nephew, Jack McGann.
Leo's career was mostly spent in personnel management with the veteran's administration. He took an early retirement from the VA Central Office, Washington, DC and moved with wife, Mary, to Port St. Lucie in 1981. He joined the Sandpiper Men's Golf Association and served on all offices of the board of directors. He continued as Tournament Chairman of the SMGA and ultimately became known as "Mr. Tournament Chairman". He was jointly responsible in the formation of the Deaf Service Center of the Treasure Coast, Inc. For many years he and Mary attended the North Stuart Baptist Church in Stuart, FL and in Dothan he was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church.
A graveside service for Leo will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Route 122A), in Rutland. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Port St. Lucie Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 8026, Port St. Lucie, FL 34985, or the American Diabetes Association, Research Fund, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or the building fund at Covenant United Methodist Church, 3610 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
