Madeline Hawes Obituary

Madeline R. (Harnois) Hawes, 89, passed away February 25, 2008 after a recent illness. Her husband Philip C. Hawes passed in 1975. She is survived by two step daughters, Joyce Nordyke of Albequerque, NM and Beverly Patten of Limerick, ME; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two siblings, Barbara and Richard Harnois.

Madeline was born November 1, 1918 in North Grafton the daughter of Edmund and Lucy Cora (Snow) Harnois and was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Hawes first worked for The NY Central Railroad in Boston and at Union Station in Worcester. She then was the Grafton Town Treasurer for a total of 22 years retiring in 1981. Mrs. Hawes was a graduate of Grafton High School class of 1936, a member of The Baptist Church of Grafton, a member and past president of The North Grafton Women's Club and Grafton District Nursing Association, a member of Delisle-Goulet Post 92 American Legion Auxiliary, The MA Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association, a founding member of The Grafton Historical Society, a Campfire Girls leader and she volunteered at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester after retiring. Madeline was a true "Graftonite" sharing her talents and time unselfishly with her town, church, family and friends alike.

Funeral services will be Friday February 29th at 11 a.m in The Baptist Church of Grafton, 1 South St., Grafton Center. Following cremation her ashes will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. There will be a visitation time Friday from 9:30 to 11 a.m in the church before her funeral service. Madeline has requested donations may be made in her name to The Baptist Church of Grafton Memorial Fund, 1 South St., Grafton, MA 01519 in lieu of flowers. I visited Aunt Madeline a few times and she was always full of energy and enjoyed life to the fullest. I will always rember her this way. My sympathies to all of her family both near and far. We will never forget her.
