Michael Membrino Obituary
Lunenburg - Dr. Michael A. Membrino, 47, of Lunenburg, died peacefully in his home on Sunday morning, November 22.
Michael was born in Leominster on August 23, 1968 and lived in Lunenburg all of his life. He graduated from Lunenburg High School in 1987 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with Highest Distinction. Michael also went on to earn his PhD from the University of Florida where he was honored as a National Science Fellow.
He leaves his parents Robert A. and Denise M. (LeBlanc) Membrino of Lunenburg; two brothers, Mark A. Membrino and his wife Jenny of Darien, WI and Matthew J. Membrino and his wife Theresa of Fayston, VT; four nieces, Madeline, Abigail, Josephine and Anastasia; his maternal grandmother Theresa LeBlanc of Fitchburg, many aunts, uncles, and several cousins.
Mike loved spending time with family and friends, particularly his nieces. He spent many hours taking pictures of family and nature. He was an avid reader and loved all Boston sports teams. As a teenager, Mike was a great athlete and played on the Leominster Babe Ruth All Star team that took 2nd place in the nation. Although paralyzed in a football accident at 16, he went on to achieve many academic accolades eventually earning a PhD degree at the University of Florida. His work in the field of transdermal drug therapy continues to form the basis of new drug delivery systems used today.
In spite of Mike's obvious physical challenges, his infectious smile and unwavering positivity always lifted the spirits of everyone around him. He will be dearly missed by everyone that knew him. Although Mike had a PhD in Science he also had a Honorary Degree In Life, which he practiced every day, always seeing the good in everyone, and just focusing on what could be!
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 30, at 11 AM in St. Boniface Church, 817 Massachusetts Ave., Lunenburg. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29, from 2 to 5 PM in the T.J. Anderson and Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St., Townsend.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. 1095 NW 14th Terrace, Lois Pope LIFE Center, Miami, FL 33136

We just learned of Mike passing, and are SO sorry to hear it. Mike made such an impression of those of us here at SHC. It was a privilege to meet him and your family. I enjoyed every interaction with him - he had such an amazing outlook on life and made me smile or laugh every time I was with him. I learned some tips & tricks from him too :)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Membrino and family:
I am deeply saddened by the news of Michael's death. I have fond memories of the time Mike was in my research group. His eternal optimism and good spirits were infectious and set the tone for me and the rest of my group. By watching him direct the activities of a team of assistants, I learned to improve my management of my students. I will never forget how carefully Mike conducted electrochemical experiments through the hands of his assistants or how meticulously he wrote papers and computer programs. In addition to performing his research, Mike led efforts to improve the infrastructure of the lab. His contributions are still visible after 15 years. I am grateful for the opportunity to have Mike in our lives.

I am sorry I will not be able to be with you during this difficult time but please know that I am praying for you and Mike and I have you in my heart. I loved Mike and his enthusiasm for life. I loved working with him and listening to his stories about childhood and his family. He loved you so much !! He was a great inspiration to many of us and he was a great friend to me. I have so many good memories of Mike that it is difficult for me not to cry remembering him. Mike inspired me to get my PhD. When I graduated in 2000 I was very thankful to him. My memories of Michael are a weekend camping excursion in Vermont. While the hunters were busy setting up their stands, Michael and I picked mushrooms and with an Audubon book on trees in hand, we walked all day identifying all the trees we found there. At the age of 10, Michael was great company! Intelligent, funny, and a wisdom beyond his age. I remember telling Bob then that his son was extraordinarily special. Angels touch all those they meet with love, joy, uplifting inspiration and blessings. That was the essence of Michael-he was an angel who flew through life and touched all he met in a profound way.

Bobby: I haven't stopped thinking about Michael, you and your family since we spoke earlier this evening. My enduring memory of him was when I visited him in the hospital shortly after his injury. It took me 15 minutes to be able to finally ask Michael how HE was doing. The minute I walked in the room he began asking about me and my family. What a remarkable man and what a gift he was to those of us lucky enough to have known him. You will be in my thoughts on the 30th. I hope to see you when I'm in Massachusetts for the holiday. Such sad news to hear of Mike's passing just a couple of weeks after we had communicated with him. We were so excited to hear he was doing so much better and we were looking forward to more of such wonderful updates. However, our Maker had another plan for him. I am sure no words can take your pain away, but know that we are with you in spirit across the oceans

I'll never forget all the great Red Sox talks I had with Mike over all these years I pumped gas at Bob Kelly's place. Every time Dave Rodgers would bring Mike in the van for a fill up, I climb in the front seat and Mike would have a huge smile and the latest Sox talk. We liked all the same players. Dear Membrino Family,
My prayers are with you. Mike was an amazing man and I was privileged to have worked with him, study with him and "be his hands" as he said. I am so sad to find out the news that I can barely type but I want you to know how much he meant to me and how much you meant to him. He never stopped talking about you. He always had you in his heart when he was in Gainesville and everytime he talked about you, his face lit up and his smile would show. I hope you have comfort knowing that Mike loved you with all his heart and that he was an inspiration for me and for many people. You must be very proud of him. His legacy in science will also be forever remembered. I am a better person because of Mike and there is no greater gift in this world than that. I can't imagine what you must be feeling but I hope you know that Mike will continue to make a difference in the lives of many people.

Mike was a wonderful person who always had that great smile on his face and always cared more about others than himself. We always saw each other in CVS or WalMart and he was always so nice to talk to. I will miss him so much. He was and always will be a class act and one of my very favorite classmates. I went to high school with Mike. I only saw him a few times after I moved away from Massachusetts, but I'd hear about him from time to time and knew he was up to great things. So sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to all his loved ones.
