Nelson Stephens Obituary

Nelson L. Stephens, 74, of Old Orchard Beach, ME, formerly of Fitchburg, died Sunday, May 3, in the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME.

He was born in Waterville, ME, on Sept. 25, 1934, a son of the late, Nelson C. and Marie (Lawless) Stephens. He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School with the Class of 1953.

Mr. Stephens was a press foreman for the Fitchburg Sentinel for many years and retired in 1997 as a mechanic consultant with the Thomson Newspaper Company. He had a passion for cooking and woodworking but his true love was his time spent on the beach.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Irene R. (Gagnon) Stephens, of Old Orchard Beach, ME; a son, Brian L. Stephens and his wife Tamara of Attleboro, three daughters, Brenda J. Boyer and her husband Bruce of Pawtucket, RI, Paula R. Bright and her husband Willard of Newton, and Elise A. Carnahan and her husband Eric of Coraopolis; three brothers: Peter Stephens, Francis Stephens and Bernard Stephens, all of Fitchburg; two sisters: Roz Pohlmann of Youngstown, OH and Vicky Coombs of Chesterfield, MO; four grandchildren: Stephen Boyer, Patrick Boyer, Morgan Carnahan and Norah Carnahan and several nephews and nieces.

The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses on the 5th floor of the Richards Building at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 11 AM. in the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1200 John Fitch Hwy., Fitchburg. Burial will be in the St. Bernard's Cemetery in Fitchburg at a later date. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 6, from 5-8 PM in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Amyloid Research Fund, 72 East Concord St, K-503, Boston, MA 02218 or to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Although we haven't been as close sinced we have moved to Florida, we will never forget and cherish all the great times we had with you and your family on Belmont St., East St. Old Orchard Beach and Altoona, PA.
